“Use and experiment with different materials, techniques, technologies and processes to make artworks.”
In this engaging lesson, Year 2 students will explore the concept that nature offers a wide array of colours and textures. By taking a mini-excursion around the school grounds, they will collect natural materials (such as leaves, flower petals, grass and small twigs), observe colours and textures in the environment, and use these finds to create a visually rich collage. The focus is on observation, curiosity, and creative expression.
This authentic, hands-on exploration will enhance students' understanding of warm/cool colours, texture, and pattern. The activity links physical exploration with artistic making, fostering creativity and environmental appreciation.

“Did you know that a leaf isn’t always just green? Let’s go exploring!”
Safety Tip: Avoid anything sharp, prickly, or unknown. Teacher or aide to scan collections on return.
🖌 Teacher Facilitator Tips:
Science (Biological Sciences – ACSSU030):
“Living things grow, change and have offspring similar to themselves.” – Links through identifying and respectfully engaging with natural items.
English: Oral language development through reflection and sharing.
Include a “Nature Treasure Frame” – give each student a cardboard frame to place over their collage like a mini artwork gallery. It enhances a sense of pride and provides a visual ‘window’ to nature’s palette. Students may take a photo for their Visual Arts journal or portfolio.
Lesson 5: “Expressive Landscapes” – Inspired by today’s natural palette, students will begin a simple landscape painting project using colours, textures, and shapes observed to express feelings and seasons.
Prepared with creativity, care, and connection to Country. Let children’s eyes reawaken our own to the colours of the land around us.
