Lesson Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students will:
✅ Review key safety skills covered in the unit.
✅ Reflect on their personal growth in understanding safety strategies.
✅ Share their individual safety plans with their peers.
✅ Engage in a collaborative Q&A session to reinforce safety learning.
Lesson Structure
1. Warm-Up Activity – Safety Snap (10 minutes)
Purpose: Activates prior knowledge in an engaging way.
- Prepare 20 safety scenario cards in advance (e.g., “What do you do if a stranger offers you a ride?”, “What should you do if there is a fire at home?”).
- Divide the class into four groups of six students.
- Place the cards face down in the centre of each group’s circle.
- One student picks a card, reads it aloud, and the first student who correctly responds with a safety strategy 'snaps' their fingers to answer.
- Rotate turns to ensure all students participate.
- Discuss briefly after each correct answer to reinforce knowledge.
2. Whole-Class Discussion – Personal Growth Check-In (10 minutes)
Purpose: Encourages reflection on learning progress.
- Pose the question: “How have your safety skills improved since the start of this unit?”
- Display a Growth Tracker (a large piece of paper or whiteboard with sentence starters such as “Before I started this unit, I didn’t know how to… but now I can…”)
- Students take turns adding a sentence with their reflections (or share verbally if preferred).
3. My Safety Plan – Individual Showcase (15 minutes)
Purpose: Encourages personal responsibility and application of safety strategies.
- Prior to the lesson, students would have created their Personal Safety Plan Worksheet (outlining key strategies for handling unsafe situations).
- Each student presents their plan to a small group of four peers.
- Ensure each group provides constructive feedback (e.g., “I really liked how you included who you would call in an emergency”).
- After sharing, ask students to discuss:
- “What was one thing in someone else’s safety plan that you will also use?”
4. Quiz Show – Safety Mastermind (15 minutes)
Purpose: Reinforces key learning in an interactive format.
- Set up a Safety Mastermind Quiz with ‘buzzers’ (or students slap their thighs to 'buzz in').
- Questions should range from easy (e.g., “What is the emergency phone number in Australia?”) to challenging (e.g., “What are three signs that someone might be unsafe online?”).
- Award team points for correct answers.
- Ensure students explain their reasoning after answering.
- Celebrate the winning team but reinforce the idea that everyone is a winner when it comes to safety!
5. Exit Activity – Letters to My Future Self (10 minutes)
Purpose: Encourages long-term reflection and application of safety skills.
- Students write a short letter to their future selves:
- “Dear Future Me, these are the most important safety strategies I have learned…”
- “I hope that in the future I will continue to use these skills by…”
- Seal letters in an envelope and return them in six months as a reminder of their learning.
Assessment & Reflection
- Teacher Observation: During discussions, assess student confidence in discussing safety strategies.
- Student Self-Assessment: Growth reflection activity and individual safety plans demonstrate understanding.
- Peer Feedback: Students engage in constructive feedback during small group presentations.
