Overview

In this lesson, students build on last lesson’s ideas about European imperial expansion by investigating how navigation and shipbuilding innovations made long-distance travel faster, safer and more reliable. Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–6 min · Hook (Think–Pair–Share). Teacher displays a simple “distance challenge” map (Europe to West Africa to Australia) and asks: “What makes travel across oceans possible—people or machines?” Students think, then pair to list 3 things they think would be essential for safe travel.

  2. 6–15 min · Quick recap + mini direct teach.
