Detailed Lesson Plan

Introduction (0-5 minutes)

  • Begin by sharing the learning intentions and why business analysis is important for making decisions.
  • Briefly explain each technique:
    • Brainstorming: Generating as many ideas as possible without judgement.
    • SWOT: Analysing Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats within the business.
    • PESTLE: Looking at Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal, and Environmental factors impacting the business.
    • MOST: Clarifying the Mission, Objectives, Strategies, and Tactics of a business plan.
  • Link to how businesses need to respond to changing markets and environments (AC9HE8K02).

Activity 1: Brainstorming (5-15 minutes)

  • Present the business idea (e.g., a small local cafe or a school canteen project).
  • Ask the class to suggest strengths and opportunities in an open brainstorming session.
  • Record ideas on the board/flipchart.
  • Emphasise collaboration, no idea is a ‘wrong’ idea, encourage creative thinking.

Activity 2: SWOT Analysis (15-25 minutes)

  • Divide students into 4 groups of 5.
  • Provide SWOT templates.
  • Each group completes SWOT analysis on the business idea considering the brainstorming results.
  • Prompt groups to think critically about internal factors (strengths, weaknesses) and external factors (opportunities, threats).
  • Teacher circulates to support and ask guiding questions.

Activity 3: PESTLE Analysis (25-35 minutes)

  • Using new handouts, groups explore external environmental factors that could influence the business.
  • Discuss each PESTLE category briefly with examples:
    • Political: e.g., regulations affecting food businesses.
    • Economic: e.g., local income levels affecting sales.
    • Social: e.g., community food trends.
    • Technological: e.g., online ordering options.
    • Legal: e.g., health and safety laws.
    • Environmental: e.g., waste and sustainability policies.
  • Groups add relevant points to their PESTLE templates.

Activity 4: MOST Analysis (35-45 minutes)

  • Introduce MOST analysis as a tool to plan and focus a business’s future.
  • Groups define:
    • Mission: Overall purpose (e.g., “To provide healthy, affordable meals to students”).
    • Objectives: Specific goals (e.g., “Increase customer base by 20% in six months”).
    • Strategies: Broad approaches (e.g., “Introduce loyalty programs”).
    • Tactics: Specific actions (e.g., “Create a punch card system for free coffee”).
  • Students use insights from SWOT and PESTLE to guide their MOST planning.

Plenary and Assessment (45-50 minutes)

  • Each group briefly shares one key insight from their analyses.
  • Teacher prompts reflection:
    • How can these tools help businesses?
    • What surprised you about the business environment?
  • Optionally, a short quiz/exit slip:
    • Name two internal and two external factors from SWOT.
    • List any two categories from PESTLE.
    • Describe one element from MOST.
  • These responses gauge understanding aligned with AC9HE8S05 and AC9HE8K02.

Differentiation and Extension

  • Support: Scaffold templates with examples, offer additional guided questions.
  • Extension: Challenge fast groups to relate analysis to real businesses or current market events.
  • Inclusion: Encourage all voices in brainstorming, use visual aids for diverse learning preferences.

This lesson plan encourages active, collaborative learning reflecting Northern Territory business curriculum standards for Year 8, developing analytical skills around market adaptation and environmental awareness crucial for economic and business literacy【11:AC9HE8K02.md】【8:AC9HE8S03.md】【18:AC9HE8S05.md】.
