  • Teacher-led Explanation:

    • Explain the court dimensions, key areas (key, three-point line, half-court line), and how they are used in play.
    • Demonstrate the basic rules using visual markers (cones to show the key areas).
    • Discuss how possession, fouls, violations (double dribble, travelling), and scoring work.
  • Student Activity – Court Walk (2 mins):

    • Divide students into three small groups and have them walk through the key areas of the court while the teacher reinforces their functions.

3. Player Positions & Roles (7 mins)

  • Teacher-led Demonstration (3 mins):

    • Explain each position’s role through real-game examples.
  • Student Activity – Position Rotation (4 mins):

    • Form groups of five. Each student acts as a specific position while passing a ball around.
    • Rotate through positions briefly to reinforce the concepts.

4. Fundamental Movement Skills (10 mins)

  • Skill Focus: Dribbling & Passing
    • Dribbling (4 mins): Students practise dribbling in straight lines, then around cones. Coaching points: head up, controlled bounce, use fingertips.
    • Passing (6 mins): Partner passing drill using chest passes and bounce passes. Coaching points: step into the pass, thumbs down follow-through.

5. Mini-Team Challenge: "Pass & Move" Drill (8 mins)

  • Game Setup:

    • Divide class into four teams of six.
    • Each team lines up and completes quick passes before cutting toward the hoop.

Assessment & Reflection

  • Formative: Observing students’ dribbling, passing, and understanding of court layout.
  • Peer Reflection: Turn to a partner and share one strength and one area to improve.

Equipment & Resources

  • Basketballs (1 per pair)
  • Cones/Markers
  • Whiteboard & markers for drawing court outline

Teacher Notes & Differentiation

  • Engagement Strategy: Make rule explanation interactive by asking students to "act out" common violations (e.g., travelling).
  • Adaptations for Skill Levels:
    • Beginner: Use larger, lighter basketballs for easier control.
    • Advanced: Introduce a competitive passing drill with defenders.
  • Classroom Management: Assign roles (team leaders, whistle leader) to encourage peer responsibility.
