Lesson Breakdown (53 Minutes)
1. Welcome, Briefing & Objectives (5 minutes)
- Location: Outdoor court or large indoor space
- Activity: Teacher welcomes students, highlights today is their formal beep test assessment.
- Quickly revise the key concept of aerobic capacity and why we're assessing it again.
- Emphasise this is a personal challenge, not a competition.
👂 "Remember, this isn't about who wins; it's about checking your growth. You're competing with your previous self."
2. Warm-Up and Mobility Activation (8 minutes)
🧠 Incorporate student-led warm-up: one volunteer leads.
3. Beep Test Assessment Protocol (35 minutes including test & cool-down)
Pre-Test Setup (5 minutes)
- Review beep test procedure:
- 20m shuttle run.
- Pace yourself to the beep.
- Stop when you cannot reach the line two consecutive times.
- Distribute recording sheets to each student (with previous result noted for comparison).
- Students assigned partners:
- One partner runs, one records.
- Then switch.
👀 Teacher circulates to check for understanding and ensures spacing and safety.
Beep Test Execution (10–15 minutes)
- Play the test audio. Monitor pacing and student movement.
- Encourage students to challenge themselves while respecting their limits.
- Teacher records backup results where necessary.
📏 Ensure students touch or cross the 20m line on time.
Switch Roles and Repeat Test (10–15 minutes)
- Second group performs the test.
- Emphasise hydration and pacing again.
- First group now in observer/record-keeper role.
4. Cool Down & Stretch (5 minutes)
- Guided breathing exercises (1 min).
- Gentle walking to slow heart rate (2 min).
- Static stretches: hamstrings, quads, calves, arms (2 min).
🌬️ Focus on post-performance mindfulness — breathing & heart rate awareness.
Reflection & Goal Setting (In-Pair Debrief - Final 5 Minutes)
- Sit in shaded or sheltered area.
- Distribute reflection questions (printed on back of recording sheets):
📝 Reflection Prompts:
- What level/shuttle did you reach today?
- How does this compare to your last test in lesson 5?
- What do you think helped you improve/stagnate?
- Write one SMART fitness goal to work towards between now and lesson 20.
📣 Invite one or two students to share their fitness goal aloud (optional).
Differentiation Strategies
-
Support:
- Shortened test option for students with medical concerns (run until a set time).
- Pair students with peer mentors who’ve shown competence in pacing.
-
Extension:
- Goal-setting includes planning a 4-week strategy using informal running sessions at home or during recess.
- Use of digital apps to track progress (note: optional, not required).
Assessment (Formative & Summative)
-
Practical Assessment:
- Beep test completion recorded with fidelity, honest effort and form.
- Safety and movement technique observed.
-
Reflective Assessment:
- Student reflections and SMART goals evaluated for specificity and self-awareness.
- Discussion used for formative feedback.
Teacher Notes
- Ensure audio volume is adequate and tested before lesson start.
- Make time-efficient rotations between runners and record-keepers.
- Encourage quiet during test runs to help students focus.
- Maintain hydration break policy if hot weather applies (refer to school PE safety guidelines).
- Record data for tracking in future summary report.
Extension Into Next Lesson (Lesson 16 Preview)
Next session will involve group circuit training tailored to common goal areas identified in this assessment. Students will begin working towards their specific SMART aerobic goals with peer-supported challenges.
End of Lesson Reflection (For Teacher)
- Who improved since lesson 5, and why?
- Which students struggled with motivation or challenge?
- Were there any issues with test set-up or flow?
- Which parts of the lesson felt impactful for students?
