Teaching Instructions

This is lesson 2 of 10 in the unit "Bounce and Punt Mastery". Lesson Title: Improving Ball Bounce Skills Lesson Description: LI: We are learning to improve control and consistency when dribbling/bouncing a basketball. Success Criteria: (I can…) Describe the correct technique for bouncing a basketball. Warm-up: VIP Tag with team dynamics. Skill Development: Zig-Zag Cone Dribble for direction changes. Main Activity: Dribble Line Tag to enhance spatial awareness. Reflection: Share experiences of teamwork and control.

Learning Intention

We are learning to improve control and consistency when dribbling and bouncing a basketball.

Success Criteria

  • I can describe the correct technique for bouncing a basketball.
  • I can demonstrate improved ball control while dribbling.
  • I can change direction while maintaining control of the ball.
  • I can work cooperatively with others during team activities.

Curriculum Alignment

Victorian Curriculum Health and Physical Education (HPE) – Year 4

  • Movement and Physical Activity
    • ACPMP028: Practise and apply fundamental movement skills, including running, jumping, catching, throwing, kicking, striking and bouncing in isolation and combination, with more control and coordination.
    • ACPMP030: Participate in minor games, modifying rules and equipment to improve engagement and fairness.
    • ACPMP031: Identify ways to use body and spatial awareness to cooperate with others in physical activities.

This lesson supports refining object control skills through bouncing/dribbling basketballs and developing spatial awareness within a game context【10:AC9HP4M01.md†Victorian Curriculum HPE】.

Equipment Needed

  • 50 basketballs or size-appropriate balls for Year 4 students
  • Cones for zig-zag layout (approx. 10 sets for skill drills)
  • Tags or coloured bands for VIP Tag
  • Open gym or outdoors sports area suitable for 50 students

Lesson Timing & Flow (60 minutes)

1. Warm-Up: VIP Tag with Team Dynamics (10 minutes)

  • Description: “VIP Tag” is a high-energy tag game where selected ‘VIPs’ try to avoid being tagged by chasers.
  • Divide class into teams of 5-6.
  • Roles rotate to ensure everyone is a VIP.
  • Emphasise safe spatial awareness, quick movement, and communication.
  • Purpose: Warm up muscles and joints, activate cardiovascular system, build team cooperation and spatial awareness essential for ball control activities.

2. Explicit Teaching: Correct Basketball Bounce Technique (7 minutes)

  • Teacher demonstrates:
    • Use fingertips (not palm) to bounce the basketball.
    • Keep the ball below waist height.
    • Keep eyes up, not on the ball.
    • Use controlled and consistent dribbling rhythm.
  • Teacher talks through key body posture: knees slightly bent, shoulders relaxed.
  • Invite 3-4 volunteers to demonstrate.
  • Remind students of importance of control and consistency as criteria for success.

3. Skill Development Activity: Zig-Zag Cone Dribble (15 minutes)

  • Set cones approximately 2-3 metres apart in a zig-zag pattern.
  • Students dribble the basketball weaving through cones, focusing on changing direction while maintaining control.
  • Key coaching points:
    • Keep ball close to body.
    • Dribble with fingertips.
    • Look forward, not down.
  • Run in 2 waves: First 25 students go while others watch and give feedback using success criteria.
  • Swap groups.
  • Encourage positive peer feedback focusing on control and technique.

4. Main Activity: Dribble Line Tag (20 minutes)

  • Split class into two groups of 25.
  • Designate a safe area for "dribble line tag".
  • Rules:
    • Each student must dribble their basketball while tagging other players.
    • Tagged students freeze and do 5 controlled dribbles to re-enter.
    • Emphasise teamwork, spatial awareness to avoid collisions, and control under pressure.
  • Rotate players frequently to keep energy high.
  • Teacher and assistants observe technique and encourage success criteria adherence.

5. Reflection & Cool Down (8 minutes)

  • Circle time on the court.
  • Prompt questions:
    • What did you notice about bouncing the ball when you were moving quickly?
    • How did teammates help you during the games?
    • Describe what helped you keep control of the ball.
  • Encourage students to share one thing they learned about teamwork or control.
  • Lead light stretching focusing on arms, wrists, legs.
  • Praise effort and teamwork.

Assessment & Feedback

  • Formative Assessment:
    • Observe students’ dribbling during skill and main activities.
    • Provide immediate positive feedback focusing on use of fingertips, ball control, body posture.
    • Peer feedback during skill development to encourage reflection.
  • Self-assessment:
    • During reflection, students verbalise understanding of correct technique and teamwork experiences.
  • Use anecdotal notes for ongoing differentiation and planning.

Differentiation

  • For less confident students:
    • Allow walking pace dribbling.
    • Use larger balls or lower bounce height for control.
  • For more confident students:
    • Challenge to dribble faster or bounce with non-dominant hand.
    • Include quick turns around cones.

Safety Considerations

  • Ensure space is clear and safe for fast movement.
  • Emphasise no running with ball held and safe tagging.
  • Monitor for fatigue in large class.
  • Provide water breaks as needed.

Notes for Teachers

  • Maintain high engagement with competitive tag games.
  • Use clear, simple instructions and demonstrations suitable for Year 4.
  • Rotate activities to keep energy and focus.
  • Incorporate positive language reinforcing effort and teamwork.

This lesson plan directly aligns with Victorian Curriculum expectations for Year 4 physical education by focusing on refining object control skills such as bouncing/dribbling, applying fundamental movement skills in game contexts, and promoting teamwork and spatial awareness【10:AC9HP4M01.md†Victorian Curriculum HPE】.

Teachers who implement this plan will provide a comprehensive, fun and developmentally appropriate learning experience that builds skills progressively over the "Bounce and Punt Mastery" unit.
