Building Sentences Together

Curriculum Alignment

Australian Curriculum (v9)
Year Level: Year 2–4 (Modified for Diverse Learners)
Strand: Literacy
Sub-strand: Grammar (Expanding Sentences using Conjunctions and Pronouns)
Content Description:

  • Year 2: Use sentence-level grammar, including pronouns, conjunctions, and punctuation to extend and expand sentences. (AC9E2LA06)
  • Year 3: Build more complex sentences by using coordinating and subordinating conjunctions. (AC9E3LA06)
  • Year 4: Develop complex and compound sentences by using a variety of conjunctions while applying correct punctuation and grammar usage. (AC9E4LA06)

Lesson Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students will:
✅ Understand how conjunctions and pronouns help to combine ideas.
✅ Build more complex sentences by linking ideas using conjunctions.
✅ Work collaboratively through hands-on activities to reinforce learning.
✅ Show their understanding through verbal and written sentence construction.

Materials Required

  • Sentence Starter Cards (pre-prepared)
  • Conjunction Cards (e.g., and, but, or, so, because)
  • Pronoun Cards (e.g., he, she, it, they, we)
  • Mini Whiteboards and Markers
  • Colourful Sentence Strips or Paper
  • Glue and Scissors

Lesson Structure (45 Minutes)

1. Introduction – Sentence Jumble (10 mins)

🧩 Activity: Sentence Matching

  • Place several individual words on the board (e.g., "The dog ran / He was fast").
  • Ask students: "Can we combine these ideas into one bigger sentence?"
  • Guide them by introducing pronouns and conjunctions:
    • "Instead of repeating 'the dog,' what word can we use?" (Answer: He)
    • "What word can help us connect the two ideas?" (Possible answers: 'because' or 'so')

✔️ Student Work Evidence:
Students will verbally share rewritten examples while the teacher writes them up.

2. Hands-On Activity – Conjunction Relay (15 mins)

🃏 Activity: Interactive Sentence-Building Game

  1. Distribute Sentence Starter Cards (e.g., "The cat climbed the tree.") to half the class.
  2. The other half gets Conjunction Cards and Pronoun Cards (e.g., 'but,' 'so,' 'he').
  3. Students work together to form longer sentences by linking two ideas using correct conjunctions & pronouns.
  4. Once formed, the sentence is written on a mini whiteboard and shared.

✔️ Student Work Evidence:
Students will present their sentences, and a teacher assistant can write example sentences on poster paper for reference later.

3. Creative Sentence Challenge – Build Your Own (15 mins)

🎨 Activity: Sentence Puzzle Cut-Out

  • Provide pre-cut phrases (subject, verb, and object clauses).
  • Students mix & match pieces to create fun, silly, or meaningful sentences.
  • Encourage creativity while maintaining correct grammar.
  • Students write their final sentence on sentence strips, read them out, and stick them onto a class sentence wall.

✔️ Student Work Evidence:
Each student creates and records their final sentence using proper conjunctions and pronouns. This is displayed on a board or photographed for student reviews.

Wrap-Up & Reflection (5 mins)

🔄 Think-Pair-Share:

  • "What was the best sentence your team made today?"
  • "How do conjunctions help make writing more interesting?"

📝 Exit Ticket: Each student writes one sentence using conjunctions and pronouns before finishing for the session.

✔️ Student Work Evidence:
Written exit-ticket sentences collected for review.
