Curriculum Link:

Australian Curriculum – Digital Technologies
Content Description (ACTDIP006): Recognise and explore digital systems (hardware and software), and use simple software functions.
Content Description (ACTDIP005): Identify and explore a range of digital systems with peripheral devices for different purposes, and explain how these systems work.
Focus sub-element: Apply safe and ethical digital practices by understanding the importance of password security.

Learning Intentions

  • Students will understand why passwords are important to keep information private.
  • Students will learn the features of a strong password (length, complexity, unpredictability).
  • Students will practise creating their own strong but memorable passwords using a fun mnemonic strategy.

Success Criteria

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

✅ Explain why we use passwords and why they should be strong.
✅ Identify elements of a strong password.
✅ Create a strong, original password using a class strategy.

Duration

10 Minutes

Preparation & Materials

  • Smartboard/whiteboard
  • Name tags with pretend usernames (e.g. ZooMaster12, IceCreamAlex)
  • Printed password ‘recipe’ cards
  • Soft toy mascot (e.g. KoalaTech or DigiRoo) as class 'cyber safety helper'
  • Sticky notes and markers

Lesson Breakdown

⏱ Minute 1 – Hook & Engagement

Bring energy into the room by holding up a toy mascot (e.g. "KoalaTech") and saying:

“Meet KoalaTech! She's trying to keep her online zoo safe… but uh-oh! She used the password ‘1234’ – and all the animals escaped! What could she have done better?”

Let a few students quickly respond with ideas.

⏱ Minutes 2–4 – Teach: What Makes a Strong Password?

Display three sample passwords on the board:

  • 1234
  • lily123
  • Lily!Piano8

Ask students to vote (hands up or movement) on which password keeps KoalaTech’s zoo safe. Guide them using this chant:

"Long! Strong! Wrong's gone!"

Explain:

  • Long: At least 8 characters
  • Strong: Mix of letters, numbers, and symbols
  • Wrong's gone: Don’t use pets, birthdays, or names!

Introduce a Password Recipe:

  1. Pick a favourite animal (e.g. elephant)
  2. Pick a favourite number (e.g. 7)
  3. Add a symbol (! ? #)
  4. Mix capital letters in

Example: Eleph@7!

⏱ Minutes 5–8 – Learning Activity: Password Builders

Hand each student a sticky note and a marker. Ask them to build a secret password using the class recipe. They can whisper it to a partner (not out loud!) and write it down for KoalaTech, sticking it on the whiteboard under “KoalaTech’s Vault”.

While they work:

  • Move around and support students.
  • Prompt if they choose overly simple passwords.

Optional challenge for fast-finishers:
Can you include two animals and still make it easy to remember?

⏱ Minutes 9–10 – Reflection & Wrap-up

Invite the class to sit back on the floor. Choose one or two passwords (hide names) to celebrate and unpack with the class:

“Why is this one really strong?”

Praise effort and creativity.

End with:

“Passwords are like superhero masks – they hide your secret identity! Keep ’em strong, keep ’em safe!”

Bonus Touch: KoalaTech waves goodbye with a sealed “vault” of sticky notes.

Differentiation Strategies

🔹 Support: Provide a visual cue card with animals/numbers/symbols. Pair with peers.

🔸 Extension: Ask students to write a silly sentence to remember their password.

Cross-Curricular Ideas

  • Literacy: Alliteration for memorable passwords (e.g. BraveBat9!)
  • Mathematics: Explore patterns or sequences in passwords

Teacher Notes

  • Avoid referring to real account passwords. This is a strictly fictional exercise.
  • Consider repeating next term with a new mascot or theme (e.g. DigiDingo, SafetySnake).
  • Use insights from this activity to start a longer digital safety unit.

Assessment (Informal)

Observe student discussion, participation, and their ability to form secure passwords using the recipe. Use gathered sticky notes to check understanding.

WOW Moment Potential ✨

Surprise the class with a gold star on KoalaTech’s nose at the end — she’s proud to have such strong password protectors!
