Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–5 minutes – Hook and prior knowledge

Display a photograph of a wet tropical rainforest and a dry desert landscape using the opening climate comparison slide. Ask: “Could these places be in the same country?” Students think, pair and share what they notice about weather, plants and clothing. Introduce the learning intention.

  1. 5–15 minutes – Explicit teaching: four climates

Use the four climate types teaching slides to introduce:

  • Tropical: hot, with high rainfall, especially in the north.
  • Arid: very dry, with little rainfall, common in central Australia.
  • Temperate: generally mild, with rainfall across much of the year, common in the south-east.
  • Mediterranean: hot, dry summers and mild, wetter winters, found in parts of south-west Western Australia and southern South Australia.

Emphasise that these are broad patterns and that weather can change from day to day. Students repeat each climate name and associate it with a simple visual clue.

  1. 15–23 minutes – Map investigation

Display the labelled climate map and map-key instructions. Model how to use the title, colours and key to locate climate regions. Ask students to locate the approximate positions of the four climates and identify which climate is found in most of central Australia.

In pairs, students discuss which climate they would expect in Darwin, Alice Springs, Hobart and Perth. Clarify that cities can experience more than one local weather pattern, but the map shows broad climate regions.

  1. 23–40 minutes – Group data activity

Arrange students in five groups of three or four. Give each group the Australian climate comparison worksheet and, if helpful, use the group role cards to allocate roles such as reader, map finder, recorder and reporter.

  1. 57–60 minutes – Plenary and exit check

Show the final review and exit question slide. Students answer orally or on the back of their worksheet: “Which climate would you expect in the centre of Australia, and what evidence supports your answer?” Invite two or three responses, correcting misunderstandings and previewing the next lesson on how climate influences people and environments.
