Lesson Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  1. Collaborate in small groups to create a shared document in Microsoft Word.
  2. Use basic formatting tools (fonts, colours, images, and bullet points) to organise information.
  3. Demonstrate teamwork and communication skills in a digital project.
  4. Save and share their work with their teacher.

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction (10 minutes)

📢 Engage – The Power of Collaboration in Technology

  • Ask: "Why do we work in teams? How can working together in technology make our work better?"
  • Display an example document showing a well-structured report created by multiple people.
  • Explain that today, students will work together to create a simple group project in Microsoft Word on a topic of their choice.

👩‍🏫 Explicit Teaching – Organising Ideas in Word

  • Demonstrate on a projector or interactive whiteboard:
    • How to create a new Word document.
    • How to edit text (font, size, bold, underline, colour, bullet points).
    • How to insert images and adjust them.
    • How to use the spell check feature.
    • How to save and share a document with the teacher.

2. Main Activity (35 minutes)

🔹 Step 1: Assigning Groups & Roles (5 minutes)

  • Divide students into small groups of three to four.
  • Assign a project topic related to their classroom interests or prior learning (e.g. Australian animals, space exploration, famous landmarks).
  • Assign roles: Writer, Editor, Designer, and Researcher (if four students in a group).

🔹 Step 2: Brainstorming and Planning (5 minutes)

  • Hand out planning sheets with prompts about:
    • Title of the project
    • Main ideas (What three key things will the project include?)
    • Who is responsible for each section?

🔹 Step 3: Creating the Document (15 minutes)

  • Students open Microsoft Word and start working collaboratively.
  • The Writer types the main content.
  • The Editor checks spelling and grammar.
  • The Designer inserts and formats images.
  • The Researcher looks up facts using teacher-approved websites.

🔹 Step 4: Saving & Sharing (5 minutes)

  • Each team saves their work in a shared class folder or emails it to the teacher.
  • Quick group reflection: "What was easy? What was tricky?"

3. Reflection & Wrap-Up (15 minutes)

💬 Class Discussion – What Did We Learn?

  • Lead a discussion on teamwork:
    • How did working together help?
    • Were roles helpful?
    • What was fun about using Microsoft Word?

Mini Peer Showcase

  • Two to three groups briefly share their document on the interactive whiteboard.
  • Celebrate creativity and teamwork.

🏆 Quickfire Challenge (If time allows!)

  • Ask each group to add one fun fact to their document in a creative way (e.g. a colourful text box or word art).

Assessment & Differentiation

Assessment Strategies

Teacher Observation – Monitor how well students collaborate and use Word features.
Exit Slip – Ask students to write one digital skill they learned today on a sticky note or mini whiteboard.
Class Folder Check – Review saved documents to assess formatting and teamwork.

Differentiation Strategies

For Students Who Struggle with Typing:

  • Provide a pre-made document template with sentence starters.

For Fast Finishers:

  • Challenge them to add a simple table or smart art graphic to organise information.

For EAL/D (English as an Additional Language or Dialect) Students:

  • Use visual guides with step-by-step screenshots.

Resources & Materials Needed

  • Devices: Laptops or tablets with Microsoft Word
  • Interactive whiteboard for class demonstrations
  • Printed planning sheets for group brainstorming
  • Digital class folder for saving student work

Extension Idea 🎉

💡 Link to Real World Context:

  • Ask students how digital collaboration happens in real life (e.g. how news articles, websites, and books are created by teams).
  • Home Learning Option: Students can teach a family member how to create a simple document at home!
