Overview

In this fourth practical lesson of the 18-lesson unit Design, Model and Make, students develop several possible product concepts for their jewellery, CAD, textile or STEM design challenge. They use annotated freehand sketches and basic CAD forms, then compare concepts against previously established success criteria and select a preferred direction.

Learning intentions

Students will:

  • generate a range of possible product concepts rather than settling on the first idea
  • communicate design thinking through annotated freehand sketches and simple CAD forms
  • analyse how materials, components, tools and processes could support each concept
  • compare ideas against success criteria and justify a preferred concept

Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Hook and learning focus. Open with the concept comparison introduction and show two contrasting product concepts that solve the same problem. Students identify which concept appears more successful and name the evidence they would need before choosing.

  2. 5–13 min · Model effective concepts. Use the annotated sketch and CAD modelling slides to demonstrate rapid idea generation, an annotated freehand sketch and basic CAD operations such as creating, resizing, grouping and subtracting forms. Students record the features that make an idea communicate function, materials, construction and user needs.

  3. 13–18 min · Revisit criteria and task. Display the class design brief and criteria through the criteria and task instructions; distribute the design concepts and selection worksheet. Students highlight the three most important criteria for their own product, including at least one sustainability, safety or accessibility consideration.

  4. 18–40 min · Generate and model concepts. Teacher conferences with individuals, prompting students to combine, modify or reimagine ideas and to select appropriate materials, tools and processes. Students create at least three distinct concepts on the worksheet: two annotated freehand sketches and one basic CAD exploration, using digital tools where available.

  5. 40–50 min · Peer critique and refinement. Pair students with a peer who asks, “Which criterion does this meet?” and “What could be improved?” using the peer critique prompts. Students give and receive specific feedback, then revise one concept annotation, dimension, material choice or CAD feature.

  6. 50–57 min · Select and justify. Teacher models a quick comparison matrix on the board, weighing function, aesthetics, feasibility, sustainability and user needs. Students score or rank their concepts on the comparison and justification section and select one preferred concept, explaining why it best responds to the criteria.

  7. 57–60 min · Plenary and exit check. Return to the plenary prompts and invite two students to share a decision and its justification. Students complete the worksheet exit response: “My preferred concept is… because…; the next design question I need to investigate is…”.

  • Collect or photograph the worksheet. Check for three concepts, relevant annotations, comparison against criteria and a justified preferred concept.
