Australian Curriculum Connection
Curriculum Area: Health and Physical Education (HPE)
Content Descriptor (Year 14 equivalent): "Evaluate and apply complex movement strategies and concepts in a range of contexts to enhance team and individual performance" (ACPMP103).
General Capabilities: Critical and Creative Thinking, Cooperation, Communication.
Lesson Objectives
- Develop teamwork and communication skills through fun and competitive basketball activities.
- Enhance fundamental basketball skills: passing, dribbling, shooting, and movement.
- Promote physical fitness and enjoyment of group sports.
Preparation and Equipment
Equipment Needed:
- 4 basketballs
- 8 cones
- 2 portable hoops (if available or use existing ones on the court)
- Stopwatch or phone timer
- Whiteboard and markers for team instructions
Set-Up:
- Half-court set up with cones forming boundary zones.
- Designate two areas for small-sided games.
Lesson Breakdown (40 Minutes)
1. Welcome and Warm-Up (5 minutes)
Activity: Dynamic Drills with a Twist
- Students form a large circle on the court.
- Teacher will call out dynamic warm-up actions (e.g., jogging, high knees, lunges).
- While jogging, students pass one basketball around the circle, shouting the name of the student they’re passing to.
- Add an extra basketball to increase difficulty.
Purpose:
- Warming up bodies, energising students, and practising communication.
2. Skill Development: Passing Relay (10 minutes)
Activity: Precision Passing Challenge
- Divide the class into 4 teams of 5 students each.
- Create a relay line for each team using cones about 8 metres apart.
- Players must chest pass the ball to each other down the line and back.
- Add a bounce pass for round two.
- For a challenge: combine bounce passes and chest passes in a sequence.
Rule: The ball cannot hit the ground outside the designated zone; if it does, the team must restart the pass.
Purpose:
- Develop accurate passing and hand-eye coordination.
- Encourage team accountability.
3. Team Challenge: Basketball Obstacle Course (10 minutes)
Activity: Race Through the Hoops
- Set up an obstacle course using cones and hoops.
- Each team will take turns completing the course by:
- Dribbling the ball through cones.
- Passing to a teammate waiting at the next station.
- Shooting into a hoop to complete the round.
Scoring: Award points for both teamwork and time completion.
Purpose:
- Incorporate dribbling, passing, and shooting skills into one challenging activity.
- Allow students to support each other and focus on working together seamlessly.
4. Mini-Games: Lightning Rounds (10 minutes)
Activity: 3v3 Lightning Basketball
- Split the class into six teams (two teams play at a time, while others rotate). Games are played on half-courts for 2-minute rounds.
- After each round, the next team rotates in with fresh energy.
Rule:
- Each team must complete at least three passes before attempting to shoot.
Purpose:
- Rapid, high-energy gameplay to encourage decision-making and teamwork under time constraints.
5. Cool Down and Reflection (5 minutes)
Activity: Circle Reflection and Stretch
- Students form a circle for guided stretches (quads, hamstrings, shoulders).
- Invite students to reflect on the lesson by answering:
- What was the most enjoyable part of today’s lesson?
- What teamwork strategy worked well for your group?
- One skill you’d like to keep improving.
Purpose:
- Lower heart rate safely post-activity.
- Encourage self-reflection and goal setting.
Differentiation
- Advanced players act as mentors during relays.
- Less confident students receive clearer roles during team challenges to ensure inclusivity.
- Adjust hoop distances and obstacle design for varying skill levels.
Assessment Opportunities
- Observe student engagement and communication during team activities.
- Use lightning rounds to evaluate practical application of basketball skills under pressure.
- Listen to reflections during the cool-down to identify future learning targets.
Teacher Notes
- Foster enthusiasm by participating in the obstacle course or lightning rounds as a “bonus” opponent.
- Encourage students to cheer for their teammates during challenges to build camaraderie.
- Monitor players closely for inclusivity, ensuring every student is actively involved.
With this engaging, skill-focused plan, Year 14 students will build crucial basketball skills while enjoying the thrill of competition and teamwork!
