Lesson Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will:
✅ Improve their basketball dribbling, passing, and shooting skills in an engaging way.
✅ Apply tactical decision-making in small-sided games.
✅ Work collaboratively and communicate effectively with teammates.
Equipment Needed
- 6 basketballs
- 12 cones (for drill setup)
- 2 whistles
- 6 bibs/vests (for team identification)
- Whiteboard and markers (for brief tactical discussion)
Lesson Breakdown (40 Minutes)
1. Warm-Up (5 minutes) – “Knockout Dribbling”
- All students have a basketball inside a set boundary.
- While dribbling, their goal is to knock opponents' balls out while maintaining control of their own.
- If knocked out, students perform 5 push-ups before re-entering.
- Encourages agility, ball-handling skills, and fast decision-making.
Progression: Reduce boundary space over time to increase intensity.
2. Skill Development (10 minutes) – “Passing & Shooting Circuit”
Students rotate through three high-energy stations to refine skills:
Station 1 – Precision Passing
- Pairs work on chest and bounce passes through a coned target.
- Challenge: Complete 10 consecutive passes without dropping.
Station 2 – Speed Shooting
- Students take turns attempting 5 shots from different zones (layups, mid-range, and three-point line).
- Challenge: Team with the most successful shots wins.
Station 3 – Defensive Footwork
- Partner drill: One student dribbles, the other mirrors and attempts to ‘shadow’ without making contact.
- Improves defensive positioning and agility.
(Rotate stations every 3 minutes.)
3. Fast-Paced Game (15 minutes) – “Mini Tournament”
- 6 Teams (4-5 players per team) → 3 short 3v3 games happening simultaneously.
- Half-court setup to ensure active involvement.
- Golden Rule: Every player must touch the ball before a shot goes up (encourages teamwork).
- Scoring system: 1 point per basket.
- Rotation: Winners stay on after 2-minute rounds, challengers rotate in.
4. Cool Down & Reflection (5 minutes) – “Basketball Relay Challenge”
- Fun relay race with dribbling, passing, and shooting components.
- Students reflect with peer discussions:
- What worked well in your team’s strategy?
- What would you adjust next time?
- How did communication impact gameplay?
Final coach’s feedback and celebration of great teamwork! 🎉
Assessment Opportunities
✔️ Observation: Assess students' movement skills and decision-making in games.
✔️ Peer Reflection: Students discuss tactical success and areas for growth.
✔️ Self-Evaluation: Exit reflection (teacher asks, “What’s one key lesson you’ll take away from today’s session?”)
Teacher’s Bonus Challenge 🌟
(For engagement beyond class time)
- "Trick Shot Challenge" – Students can try and record unique basketball shots at recess/lunchtime and share with the class! Builds motivation and social connection around physical activity.
Teacher’s Notes
- Keep energy high and positive! Use a whistle for smooth transitions.
- Modify activities based on skill levels (e.g., increase/decrease game complexity).
- Reinforce sportsmanship and respect throughout.
This session ensures high engagement, skill progression, and a love for movement – all aligned with the Victorian Curriculum! 🚀🏀
