Lesson 10: Let's Dance! - Pt. 4 In this final lesson, students will learn performance techniques to enhance their choreographed dance routine. They will focus on presenting their performance with confidence and reflect on the choreography, rehearsal and performance process.

Learning Intentions: To apply performance skills that elevate our dance and engage the audience

Success Criteria:

  • Perform with confidence, professionalism and respect
  • Maintain focus and communicate clear intentions
  • Express character, story, or mood through movement and expression
  • Use performance elements to enhance the routine
  • Reflect critically on my performance to identify strengths and areas for growth

Teaching and Learning activity: (Resources to be hyperlinked in this section. Make sure in your resources you identify the tasks of differentiation with each ability group.)

Do Now:

  1. Print and review lesson plan
  2. Print the choreography sheet and dancer list sheet
  3. If using, print the worksheet (one per student)
  4. Ensure you have enough space for the activities
  5. Connect to screen and speakers to play video
  • After watching the video, students will discuss performance tips
  • They will then complete a warm-up activity
  • Students will rehearse their performance on stage before performing in front of an audience
  • The lesson will conclude with students completing a cool-down activity and a reflection task Activity 1. (15 minutes) Whole Class Guided In this activity, students will review the performance tips from the video and discuss how they can use them to elevate their dance performance.
  1. Explain to students that today's focus is on elevating their dance performance
  2. Ask students to recall the six tips Ricky shared in the video
  3. Write the numbers 1-6 on the board or on an anchor chart
  4. Invite a few students to share the tips they remember. Encourage others to build on each response until all six are identified. Record the tips as students recall them:
  • Enter and exit with confidence (Step on and off the stage with control at the correct time)
  • Maintain focus (To project and communicate clear intentions throughout the performance, make a conscious effort to use your eyes, body and attention)
  • Express character and mood (convey emotion and character through facial expression and movement)
  • Acknowledge the audience (Show awareness of their presence, facing the audience, eye contact and focus)
  • Use performance elements (enhance the routine with music, props, costumes or technology)
  • Have fun! (Show confidence and enjoy yourself why performing)
  1. Once all six tips are listed, review each one. Briefly discuss what each tip looks like in action and model or demonstrate examples as needed
  2. Ask students to share suggestions of how this could be applied to the class dance routine

Activity 2. (5 minutes) Whole Class Guided Multimedia Students will warm up their bodies, so they are ready to dance in the next activity. 1. Have students to stand up and spread out around the room 2. Press play on the warm-up video 3. Have students follow along with the warm-up 4. Remind students that warming up helps prevent injuries and prepares the body for dancing Teaching Notes Use the button in the bottom right-hand corner of the video player to make the video full screen. Variations If you'd like to lead your own warm up, find some music in the 'Warm Up 3-6' playlist in our Playlist Library. Activity 3. (25 minutes) Whole Class Assessment Opportunity Performance In this activity, students will perform the entire dance routine on a stage and in front of an audience. Review:

  1. Open Dance Lab and your saved dance routine
  2. Press play on the dance and watch it all the way through.
  • Encourage students to call out sections of the song, movement names or transitions Prepare for Performance:
  1. Move to the hall or performance space
  2. Arrange students into their starting formation
  3. Using the choreography printout as a guide, complete 2-3 full run throughs on the stage
  4. After each run through, pause to provide focused feedback (e.g. eye contact, energy, smiles, strong finishes) Perform
  5. Once students are feeling confident, invite the audience to come and watch the performance
  6. Remind students that they are always ‘on stage’, even while waiting
  7. After the audience is settled, introduce the class performance and press play on the song
  8. Students perform the routine
  9. After the performance, students bow and exit the stage
  10. Repeat the performance once more if time allows. Students are often more relaxed the second time Teaching Notes if possible, prior to the lesson, arrange a time with another class to watch the performance so students can perform in front of an audience. Activity 4. (5 minutes) Whole Class Multimedia Guided Students will cool down their bodies, to relax after dancing.
  11. Have students to stand up and spread out around the room
  12. Press play on the cool down video
  13. Have students follow along with the cool down
  14. Remind students that cooling down helps the body recover, improves flexibility, and prevents soreness Variations If you'd like to lead your own cool down, use the 'Cool Down Tunes' playlist from our Playlist Library. Activity 5. (15 minutes) Independent Worksheets Students will write a short reflection on their performance before discussing as a class.
  15. Explain to the students that they will be reflecting on their performance. This means thinking carefully about their performance, what went well, what was challenging and how effectively they worked together
  16. If using, hand out the reflection worksheet to each student
  17. Read through each of the reflection questions and clarify any questions:
  • What did you enjoy most about performing for an audience? Why?
  • What aspects of the performance were challenging?
  • What do you think you did well? Provide an example
  • How did rehearsal and working together improve the final performance?
  • If you could perform it again, what would you improve and why?
  • What skills do you think improved the most during the creating, rehearsing and performing process? (E.g. timing, expression, confidence, teamwork etc)
  1. Give students 10 minutes to respond to the reflection questions
  2. After 10 minutes, bring the class back together and invite students to share some of their responses Variations Complete the reflection questions has a partner discussion

Overview

Students rehearse and perform their choreographed dance routine, applying performance techniques to engage an audience. They then reflect critically on their performance to identify strengths and next steps, building toward confident presentation in informal and formal settings.

Learning intentions

  • Students will apply performance skills (focus, intentions, expression, and audience awareness) to elevate our dance.
  • Students will perform with confidence, professionalism, and respect.
  • Students will reflect on rehearsal, performance, and teamwork to decide what to improve next time.

Success criteria

  • I can enter and exit with control and confidence at the correct times.
  • I can maintain focus and communicate clear intentions throughout the routine.
  • I can express character, story, or mood using my facial expression and movement quality.
  • I can use performance elements (e.g. timing with music, props/costumes/technology where appropriate) to enhance the routine.
  • I can reflect clearly on what went well, what was challenging, and what I would improve and why.

Lesson structure (50 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Do Now: prep and connect. Teacher checks learning area space, turns on screen and speakers, and ensures printed materials are ready (lesson plan, choreography sheet, dancer list; optional reflection worksheet). Students silently set up: stand where they will warm up and place choreography and dancer list in front of them.

  2. 5–20 min · Activity 1: performance tips (Whole Class Guided). I do (modelled): Teacher explains today’s focus and reviews the six performance tips, demonstrating what “good” looks like (e.g., stepping on/off stage with control, strong eye focus, expressive faces). We do (guided): Students recall the six tips from the video; teacher writes numbers 1–6 and records student suggestions, then checks understanding by asking “Where in our routine would we show this?” You do (independent): Each student chooses two tips to personally focus on during rehearsal/performance and states them to the group (one sentence each).

Teacher records the tips:

  • Enter and exit with confidence (step on and off stage at the correct time)
  • Maintain focus (project clear intentions; conscious eyes/body attention)
  • Express character and mood (facial expression + movement)
  • Acknowledge the audience (face the audience; eye contact)
  • Use performance elements (music alignment, props/costumes/technology where used)
  • Have fun! (confidence and enjoyment)
  1. 20–25 min · Activity 2: warm-up (Whole Class Guided Multimedia). I do (modelled): Teacher plays the warm-up video and demonstrates key cues once (posture, safe range). We do (guided): Students follow the warm-up together, moving safely and keeping control. You do (independent): Students adjust their own movement to stay within their safe range and demonstrate readiness by returning to stillness when prompted.

  2. 25–45 min · Activity 3: performance rehearsal and audience (Whole Class Assessment Opportunity). I do (modelled): Teacher leads 1–2 practice run-throughs from the stage position, pausing to model one “fix” (e.g., stronger ending pose, clearer eye contact, better timing on entrance). We do (guided): After each run-through, students receive focused feedback from teacher and peers using success-criteria language (e.g., “I noticed your exit was controlled”). You do (independent): Students perform the full routine on stage, then bow and exit. If time allows, repeat once more and apply one chosen improvement from their two tips.

Performance supports during rehearsal:

  • Dancer list and choreography printed as reference
  • Teacher pauses only at clear points (entrances, transitions, endings)
  • “Always on stage” reminder: students hold performance-ready posture even while waiting
  1. 45–50 min · Activity 4: cool down (Whole Class Multimedia Guided). I do (modelled): Teacher starts cool down video and demonstrates slow breathing and relaxed shoulders. We do (guided): Students follow and keep spacing. You do (independent): Students choose one body area to relax (e.g., hips/shoulders) and hold stillness briefly when the video pauses.

  2. 50–60 min · Activity 5: reflection (Independent Worksheets) — note: If you must keep to 50 minutes total, complete reflection in the next lesson or as a partner discussion at the end instead of writing. Teacher note for pacing: If staying strictly within 50 minutes, shorten Activity 3 by 5 minutes and complete 10 minutes of reflection now. I do (modelled): Teacher reads one example answer framework: “What went well…” + “Why…” + “What I’ll improve next time…” We do (guided): Students share one reflection idea as a class. You do (independent): Students complete the worksheet quietly for 10 minutes (or partner discussion if printed worksheets are unavailable). Students then volunteer to share.

Resources

  • Printed lesson plan
  • Choreography sheet (one per group)
  • Dancer list sheet
  • Reflection worksheet (optional; one per student)
  • Stage/performance space (clear, safe floor area)
  • Screen and speakers for video playback
  • Warm-up video and cool-down video
  • Timer (to manage run-throughs)
  • Clipboard or tablet for quick feedback notes (teacher)

Assessment

  • Observation checklist during rehearsal/performance (focus, clear intentions, expression, audience awareness, controlled entrances/exits).
  • Teacher prompts during run-through pauses to check understanding of performance tips.
  • Reflection (worksheet or partner discussion) to confirm students can identify strengths and one actionable improvement.

Differentiation

  • Lower potential / support:

  • Provide a “Tip Focus” card with 2 tips and 1 concrete cue per tip (e.g., “Eyes up on count 1”).

  • Use call-and-response counting (teacher calls “enter”/“finish”) and allow one extra practice run-through.

  • Sentence starters for reflection (e.g., “I enjoyed… because… / Next time I will…”).

  • Middle potential:

  • Ask students to identify where each chosen tip appears in the routine (specific moment/transition).

  • Provide one feedback goal and track it across two performances.

  • High potential and gifted:

  • Extension challenge: students choose and justify one improvement using performance language (intention, energy, timing, projection) and lead one rehearsal cue for peers.

  • Add a “performance elements” focus: propose how costume/prop/music timing could enhance meaning, then apply it in the second run.

  • EAL considerations:

  • Display the six tips as short phrases and model examples with gestures/photos if available.

  • Allow reflection orally first, then written if needed.

Extension (optional)

  • N/A (not requested).
