  • 12 bibs (6 per team)
  • Whiteboard & markers for strategy discussions
  • Printed self-reflection sheets for students

Lesson Structure (60 minutes)

1. Warm-Up & Tactical Review (10 minutes)

A guided warm-up incorporating game-specific movements to prepare students physically and mentally.

Dynamic Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Jogging as a group around the field perimeter (2 laps)
  • High knees & Butt kicks (20m each)
  • Hamstring sweeps & Lunges (20m each)
  • Arm circles & Shoulder activation (to prepare for throwing)

Quick Tactical Refresh (5 minutes)

  • Offensive Setups: Stack formation vs Spread formation – when to use each
  • Defensive Strategies: Person-to-person defence vs Zone defence
  • Game Expectations: Reinforcing Spirit of the Game & self-refereeing principles

2. The Final Scrimmage (40 minutes)

A structured Ultimate Frisbee game allowing students to apply learned skills in a competitive setting.

Game Format:

  • Teams: 6 vs 6
  • Game Duration: Two 15-minute halves with a quick break for feedback
  • Scoring system: Standard Ultimate Frisbee rules (teams score by catching the Frisbee in the opposition’s endzone)

Focus Areas:

Team communication: Effective calling and movement off the disc
Strategic positioning: Cutting and clearing space effectively
Defence transitions: Disc pressure & marking opponents
Respect & self-refereeing: Enforcing fair play and the 'Spirit of the Game'

Coach Interventions (as needed):

  • If students struggle with defensive marking: Pause briefly and adjust positioning.
  • If the game lacks pace: Introduce quick reset rules (must throw within 5 seconds).
  • If game flow is stagnant: Encourage fast resets & handler movement.

3. Game Reflection & Debrief (10 minutes)

Reflection is essential for cementing understanding and improving future gameplay awareness.

Guided Group Discussion (5 minutes)

🌟 Prompting Questions:

  • What tactics worked well for your team?
  • How did your team communicate on offence/defence?
  • What was the biggest challenge, and how did you adapt?
  • How can you improve for future games or competitions?

Individual Reflection Sheets (5 minutes)

Students will complete a quick reflection sheet with:

  • Self-rating (1-5) on communication, movement, and strategy use
  • Written response: One highlight & one area for improvement
  • Goal setting: A personal focus point for their next Ultimate Frisbee game

Differentiation & Adaptations

  • For Advanced Students: Encourage leadership roles (team captains call plays).
  • For Students Struggling with Tactics: Offer targeted coaching breaks.
  • For Students with Physical Limitations: Modify roles (e.g., acting as strategy caller or assisting refereeing).

Assessment & Success Criteria

Active engagement in the final scrimmage
Execution of key skills (throwing, catching, cutting) during gameplay
Effective communication with teammates
Reflection demonstrates understanding & progress across the unit

Teacher Reflection (Post-Lesson)
