Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Engage and predict. Open with the hook image and mystery product question showing a lunchbox and clothing items, then ask, “What did these products begin as?” Students make a silent prediction, discuss it with a partner and share one idea. Record responses without correcting them yet.

  2. 5–15 min · Explicit teaching and modelling. Use the plant, animal and managed environment teaching slides to define food, fibre, plant source, animal source and managed environment. Model a think-aloud using cotton fabric: “This is fibre, it came from a cotton plant, and cotton is grown and harvested in a managed environment.” Model a second example, such as milk, and place it on a three-column chart: Product | Source | Food or fibre. Students repeat the reasoning using the sentence frame: “The product is ____. It comes from a ____. It is used as ____.”

  3. 15–22 min · Video evidence. Play the brief ABC Future Farmers excerpt embedded in the farming video viewing slide and evidence prompts. Before viewing, direct students to listen for products, plants or animals, and reasons farmers produce them. Students jot or sketch two examples and share evidence with a partner. Pause once to clarify unfamiliar farming practices or products.

  4. 22–40 min · Guided classification investigation. Organise students into eight groups of four and distribute the group role cards to establish reader, recorder, resource manager and reporter responsibilities. Give each student the food and fibre origins classification chart. Work through the first two product examples together, then display the remaining product images and names in the guided classification activity slides. Groups classify products such as wheat bread, apples, wool, leather, cotton clothing, eggs, timber paper and honey by recording the likely source and whether the product is food or fibre. Circulate and ask: “What evidence supports your decision?” and “Is the source a plant or an animal?” Address misconceptions, including that wool comes from sheep and cotton comes from a plant.

  5. 40–52 min · Explain and apply. Display the managed environments comparison and discussion slide. Groups select two products from their charts and complete the explanation prompts: “People produce ____ in a managed environment because ____.” and “The product must be grown, raised, harvested or processed so that ____.” Invite four groups to report one example. Guide students to recognise that managed environments can include farms, orchards, plantations, grazing properties and aquaculture systems, and that production provides useful materials and food for communities.

  6. 52–60 min · Review and exit assessment. Return to the opening question using the plenary and exit question slide. Students independently answer on the bottom of the final reflection section: “Trace one product from its plant or animal source to the product people use. Why is it produced in a managed environment?” Collect worksheets as students leave and briefly revisit any common error.
