Learning Experience 8
Introduction Review the learning from the unit by asking: • What have we learned about Australia's places? • How are places connected? • What have we learned from Aboriginal Peoples about Country? • How have our map skills improved? Explain that today students will complete and present their Great Aussie Road Trip.
Explicit Teaching Review the assessment criteria and success criteria. Model how to: • Check that all map elements are included (title, compass, map key, labels and route). • Use geographical vocabulary when presenting. • Explain destination choices using evidence. Discuss the importance of speaking clearly and respectfully during presentations.
Independent Task Students complete their final project. Students should include: • A labelled map of Australia • A logical travel route • Four or more destinations • State and territory labels • Urban, rural or remote classifications • Explanations of why destinations were chosen • Connections between places • A reflection on respecting Aboriginal Country The teacher conferences with students as they work and provides support where needed.
Student Presentations Students present their road trips to the class or in small groups. During presentations, students explain: • Their travel route • Their destination choices • How places are connected • One thing they learned about Australia during the unit Peers may ask one or two respectful questions following each presentation.
Reflection/Tafakkur Students complete a written reflection: "What is the most important thing you learned about Australia and why?" Discuss: • How has your understanding of Australia's places changed? • Why is it important to appreciate and care for the land? • How can we continue to show respect for Aboriginal Country? Connect this discussion to the Islamic concept of Khalifah, reminding students that Allah (SWT) has entrusted humanity with the responsibility to care for His creation.
• Completed Great Aussie Road Trip assessment task. • Student oral presentation demonstrating geographical understanding. • Teacher assessment using the marking rubric. • Student reflection showing understanding of Australia's places, connections and Aboriginal perspectives on Country.
Students complete and present their “Great Aussie Road Trip” using geographical vocabulary and map skills, and then reflect on respecting Aboriginal Country. This lesson builds on earlier work by finalising the map, route connections, and presentation.
