Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Hook (liveability in your neighbourhood). Teacher shows a few quick prompts on the board (e.g., “places to walk”, “public transport”, “parks nearby”) and asks: Which ones matter most where you live and why? Students turn-and-talk, then share one idea linked to personal wellbeing.

  2. 5–15 min · Direct teach: BOLTSS mapping tools. Teacher introduces BOLTSS as a classroom map toolkit: B = Blank spot/where to check (what we don’t know yet), O = Orientation/compass directions, L = Legend/keys, T = Scale/distance, S = Symbols & site features (roads, services, landforms/parks), S = Source (what the map shows and any limitations). Students complete a quick “tool match” activity: they match each BOLTSS letter to a sentence starter about how they’ll use it when studying liveability.

  3. 15–30 min · Guided mapping: interpret a local map. Teacher models a think-aloud using the class map: how to use compass directions and the legend to identify features, then how to record them accurately in a table. Students work in pairs with a printed local map and recording sheet. They locate and circle required features (e.g., at least 5 amenities and 2 transport/walking features) and note their positions using direction (N/NE/E etc.) and any grid or distance cues provided.

  4. 30–45 min · Record liveability evidence (amenities and access). Teacher explains that liveability is about how places support human wellbeing, including access to services, safety, and opportunities for movement and recreation. Teacher circulates for quick checks, then runs a structured share: each group shares one amenity claim and one piece of map evidence used to justify it. Students practise improving accuracy by answering: “What map tool did you use?” and “Is your wording supported by the legend/scale/directions?”

  6. 55–60 min · Exit ticket (individual). Teacher distributes a short exit ticket with 3 prompts:

  • Name one map tool from BOLTSS you used today.
  • Identify an amenity’s approximate location using directions.
  • Write one wellbeing impact sentence using geographical terminology. Students complete independently and submit.
