Teaching Instructions

This is lesson 3 of 8 in the unit "Mastering Kicking & Touch". Lesson Title: Lesson 3: Kicking Under Pressure Lesson Description: Introduce passive defenders in modified games to challenge students’ kicking decisions and first touch while maintaining safety and teamwork.

Overview

In this third lesson of Mastering Kicking & Touch, students practise choosing the right kick and making their first touch effective when a passive defender moves into the space. The focus is on safe, fair teamwork and clear decision-making.

Learning intentions

  • Students will learn to use a kicking technique and a controlled first touch to keep possession under pressure.
  • Students will learn to read a defender’s position and decide where to kick next.
  • Students will practise teamwork behaviours: communicating, backing up, and respecting space.

Success criteria

  • I can choose a target and kick the ball safely to keep possession or create space.
  • I can make my first touch controlled (stop, trap, or redirect) to set up my next move.
  • I can talk to my team (e.g., “Mío”, “Cambio”, “Abre”) and move to a supporting position.
  • I can follow safety rules and fair play while playing with defenders.

Curriculum links

  • Movement skills and tactics: applying kicking and first-contact control in modified games
  • Participation and wellbeing: using safe body positioning, respectful play, and teamwork
  • Skills development: practising, refining and applying movement strategies in game contexts

Lesson structure (50 minutes)

  1. 7 min – Retrieval warm-up (Kick & Call)
  • Students line in small groups with a partner 5–7 m away. One student kicks a ball with a chosen cue (e.g., “inside foot” or “pass”), and the partner calls a simple response: “Recibo!” then controls the ball with first touch.
  • Quick rotation: add a mini challenge from last lesson—before kicking, the kicker briefly looks at the partner’s space and chooses where to send the ball.
  • Safety check: no swinging feet near others; kick only when space is clear.
  1. 4 min – Goals (WALT) and success criteria
  • WALT: “We are learning to kick and control the ball with our first touch when a defender is close, and to choose a safe, effective target.”
  • Teacher models one example: kick to space → first touch to control → move or pass.
  • Ask: “What should our first touch do?” (stop/redirect) and “How do we stay safe with a defender?”
  1. 12 min – I Do (Model: decisions under pressure)
  • Teacher demonstrates in front of group: pass-style kick, then first touch to stop the ball (or redirect) while scanning for the passive defender.
  • Use simple cues:
  • “Look first, kick second.”
  • “Inside foot to guide.”
  • “First touch: stop it, set it.”
  • Introduce passive defender rule: defender can move to block space but cannot tackle or contact the kicker/receiver.
  1. 10 min – We Do (Guided practice: 2v1 passive defence)
  • Set up thirds of the field. Two attackers support one ball against one passive defender.
  • Attackers must pass/kick to a teammate and receive with a controlled first touch. Defender positions to limit direct passing lanes.
  • Teacher pauses after 2–3 rounds for “freeze and feedback”: What kick target worked? Who controlled with the first touch? Encourage Spanish CLIL: “Miro” (look), “Paro” (stop), “Cambio” (switch).
  • Quick reteach moment: if many students kick straight to defender, remind “kick to open space, not to the person”.
  1. 12 min – You Do (Game: Kicking Under Pressure)
  • Play small-sided 3v3 or 2v2+1 neutral in grid lanes. Each team attacks a goal area; the defender is passive and must stay 1 m away from the ball carrier to avoid collision.
  • Rules:
  • Ball must be kicked to a teammate (no hand carrying).
  • Receiver must make a first touch that controls the ball within 1 second (stop/redirect) before kicking on.
  • One point for a controlled kick into the goal area or to a teammate in the scoring zone.
  • Teacher roams with a simple feedback lens: decision (target choice) + first touch control + communication/team backing up.
  1. 5 min – Show Me What You Know (Micro-demonstration)
  • In pairs, students perform a “pressure sequence” once: kicker looks for space, kicks to partner, partner makes first touch control, then either kicks back or passes away.
  • Partner gives one compliment and one goal using sentence starters: “You did… / Next time try…”
  1. 0 min – Wrap safety & wellbeing
  • Whole-class quick reminder: respect space, wait your turn, and celebrate fair teamwork.

Resources

  • Soft foam balls or slightly larger training balls (same size for all groups)
  • Cones to mark grids, lanes, and goal areas
  • Bibs or pinnies for attackers/defenders (passive defenders)
  • Coloured floor markers (optional) to show scoring zones
  • Whistle and timer
  • “I can” cards (quick visuals of target, first touch, teamwork)
  • Water bottles and first-aid kit

Assessment

  • Observation checklist during You Do: controlled first touch (stop/redirect), kick choice (to space), safe decision-making.
  • Quick pair performance in Show Me What You Know: student demonstrates look → kick → first touch.
  • Teacher questions: “Where did you aim and why?” “What did your first touch help you do next?”

Differentiation

  • Support:
  • Reduce pressure by using a slower, passive defender or increasing the distance between defender and receiver.
  • Allow one extra touch with the ball before the next kick (still encourage control).
  • Use larger target zones or fewer lanes.
  • Extension:
  • Add a “must switch” rule: score only after a switch of position (kick to the other side).
  • Challenge students to use two different kick targets in the same possession.
  • Increase defender influence by reducing space further (still passive, no tackling).
  • EAL/SEN:
  • Provide visual cues for “Look”, “Stop”, “Switch”.
  • Use consistent Spanish CLIL phrases with hand gestures: “Miro / Paro / Cambio”.
  • Pair students with a supportive peer and give sentence frames for communication.
  • Advanced inclusion:
  • Allow leadership roles: one student as “decision coach” calls “look, target, first touch”.
