Lesson Overview

In this lesson, the Year 8 students will begin a series of three lessons focused on a "My Favourite Genre" project. This introductory lesson aims to spark students' interest in different music genres, encourage personal expression, and set the foundation for the subsequent lessons. The lesson is designed to align with the Australian Curriculum: The Arts – Music, specifically tailored to engage Year 8 students within the depth of content and awareness expected at this level.

Lesson Sequence

1. Introduction (30 seconds):

   • Welcome the students and briefly explain the "My Favourite Genre" project. Highlight that today is about exploring diverse musical styles and sparking excitement for the project.

2. Music Snippet Activity (1 minute):

   • Play a series of 10-second music clips from different genres.
   • As students listen, ask them to jot down the first three words or feelings that come to mind for each genre in their journals.

3. Class Discussion (1 minute):

   • Engage students in a class discussion to share their initial reactions to the music clips.
   • Prompt them with questions: Which genre surprised you? Which one are you most interested in exploring further?

4. Reflective Wrap-Up (30 seconds):

   • Encourage students to reflect on which genre they felt most connected to and start thinking about why.
   • Ask them to write a short note in their journal about which genre they might want to choose for their project and what excites them about it.

Assessment

• Formative assessment through observation of student engagement during the activity and discussion.
• Review student journals to gauge initial interest and understanding of different music genres.

Extension

• For students who finish early, they can choose one genre and research a famous artist or band within that genre for the next class.
• Encourage students to bring a short clip of their favourite genre to share in the next lesson.

By structuring the lesson around quick, engaging activities, and prompting personal reflection, we aim to inspire Year 8 students and set the stage for their in-depth exploration of their chosen music genres in the upcoming lessons.
