Nature's Colours Explored
🎨 Unit Title: Creative Colour Explorations
Lesson: 4 of 5
Year Level: Year 2
Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Class Size: 12 students
Curriculum Area: The Arts – Visual Arts
Australian Curriculum Reference:
Visual Arts - ACAVAM107
“Use and experiment with different materials, techniques, technologies and processes to make artworks.”
📝 Lesson Overview
In this engaging lesson, Year 2 students will explore the concept that nature offers a wide array of colours and textures. By taking a mini-excursion around the school grounds, they will collect natural materials (such as leaves, flower petals, grass and small twigs), observe colours and textures in the environment, and use these finds to create a visually rich collage. The focus is on observation, curiosity, and creative expression.
This authentic, hands-on exploration will enhance students' understanding of warm/cool colours, texture, and pattern. The activity links physical exploration with artistic making, fostering creativity and environmental appreciation.
🎯 Learning Intentions
By the end of this lesson, students will:
- Identify and describe colours found in nature.
- Explore texture, shape and colour using natural materials.
- Create an original collage that showcases their personal interpretation of nature's palette.
- Develop curiosity and observational skills.
✅ Success Criteria
Students will:
- Collect a variety of natural items safely from the school environment.
- Verbally describe the colours and textures of at least three natural materials.
- Use at least four different found natural materials in their collage.
- Show a cohesive exploration of colour arrangement in their artwork.
- Reflect briefly on their work using simple art vocabulary.
🧠 Prior Knowledge
Students should have some prior understanding of:
- Primary and secondary colours (covered in Lesson 2)
- Warm vs cool colours (introduced in Lesson 3)
- Basic collage-making techniques (Lesson 1)
⏱ Time Breakdown: 45 Minutes

📚 Resources & Materials
For each student:
- Clipboard or cardboard backboard
- White A4 paper or light-coloured card
- PVA glue in small containers
- Brushes or glue sticks
- Scissors (used under supervision)
- Markers/crayons (optional for accents)
- Label stickers (to write name)
For the group:
- Shared baskets for collecting natural items
- Natural material safety sheet (to discuss what's okay to collect)
- Smock or old shirt (for gluing stage)
Note: Ensure students know not to collect living creatures or anything attached to a living plant. Items should be already fallen and safe to touch.
🌿 Lesson Steps in Detail
1. Welcome & Recap (5 Minutes)
- Greet students and have them sit in a circle.
- Recap last week’s lesson on warm and cool colours using flashcards or a quick colour game.
- Explain that today, students will be using nature as their colour inspiration.
“Did you know that a leaf isn’t always just green? Let’s go exploring!”
2. Nature Walk & Collection (10 Minutes)
- Walk in pairs with a basket each around a designated area within school grounds.
- Encourage students to collect a variety of textures and colours—leaves, petals, twigs, seed pods.
- Prompt guiding questions:
- “What colours do you see that surprise you?”
- “How do these textures feel?”
Safety Tip: Avoid anything sharp, prickly, or unknown. Teacher or aide to scan collections on return.
3. Collage Creation (20 Minutes)
- Each student receives a white card or paper as a base.
- Arrange materials before gluing: encourage students to think about:
- “Where does your eye go first?”
- “Which colours look nice together?”
- Allow artistic freedom but suggest deliberate arrangement for contrast or pattern.
- Students can draw on top or around items to connect them (optional).
🖌 Teacher Facilitator Tips:
- Wander and ask students about the colour choices they’re making.
- Note vocabulary cues such as “rough”, “soft”, “rusty red”, “bright yellow”.
4. Gallery Walk & Reflection (5 Minutes)
- Encourage students to do a quiet 'gallery walk' with hands behind their backs.
- Stop and admire others’ work. Prompt comments about colour and arrangement.
- Regroup to share:
- “What colour surprised you today?”
- “What was your favourite texture?”
5. Cleanup & Pack-up (5 Minutes)
- Provide tubs for scrap and offcuts.
- Show students how to gently store their collages on a drying rack or shelf.
- Return baskets and glue.
💬 Reflection & Assessment Strategies
- Informal Questioning – While students are working, ask open-ended questions about their creative decisions.
- Student Self-Reflection – At the end, students share one thing they tried that was new.
- Teacher Observation Checklist:
- ☐ Did the student collect a variety of natural items?
- ☐ Did they explore colour and texture in their arrangement?
- ☐ Did they demonstrate safe collection and use of materials?
🧩 Differentiation & Inclusion
- Support: Pre-select items for students with mobility concerns or sensory sensitivities.
- Extension: Ask early finishers to group their collage by colour families or create patterns.
- Visual Aids: Use a colour wheel and texture word chart for visual learners.
🔗 Cross-Curricular Links
-
Science (Biological Sciences – ACSSU030):
“Living things grow, change and have offspring similar to themselves.” – Links through identifying and respectfully engaging with natural items.
-
English: Oral language development through reflection and sharing.
⚡️ WOW Factor
Include a “Nature Treasure Frame” – give each student a cardboard frame to place over their collage like a mini artwork gallery. It enhances a sense of pride and provides a visual ‘window’ to nature’s palette. Students may take a photo for their Visual Arts journal or portfolio.
📷 Teacher Reflection (Post-Lesson Prompt)
- Which colours were most commonly found by students?
- Did students use the colour terminology learned in previous lessons?
- How might these collages evolve into a larger group artwork for display?
