Number Operations Intro
🎯 Lesson Overview
- Year Level: Year 6
- Subject: Mathematics
- Lesson Duration: 60 minutes
- Lesson 1 of 9 — Unit Title: Mastering Number Operations
- Cross-Curriculum Priorities: General Capabilities – Literacy, Numeracy, Personal and Social Capability
- Australian Curriculum Focus Area:
ACMNA123 – Select and apply efficient mental and written strategies and appropriate digital technologies to solve problems involving all four operations with whole numbers.
🧠 Learning Intentions
By the end of this lesson, students will:
- Recognise and describe the four basic number operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
- Understand the relationships between the operations (e.g., inverse operations).
- Use mathematical vocabulary to explain thinking and strategies.
- Reflect on the importance of these operations in real-world problem solving.
✅ Success Criteria ("Bump It Up" Style)
| Bump It Up Level | What It Looks Like |
|---|
| 👶 Getting There | I can identify the four number operations. |
| 👟 On the Way | I can match operations to their symbols and basic meanings. |
| 🌱 Almost There | I can explain the relationship between at least two operations. |
| 🚀 You’ve Got It! | I can explain all four operations and use them in a maths problem. I use maths language confidently. |
💬 Vocabulary Focus (Learning Wall)
| Term | Definition |
|---|
| Operation | A mathematical process (add, subtract, multiply, divide) |
| Sum | The answer to an addition problem |
| Difference | The answer to a subtraction problem |
| Product | The result of multiplication |
| Quotient | The result of division |
| Inverse | The opposite or reverse operation |
🧍♂️ Student Considerations & Differentiation
- 👓 Dyslexic student: Use visual supports, colour-coded symbols, extra time, enlarged print worksheet version.
- 🧠 II student: Simplified language, paired with a peer buddy, hands-on materials like counters or dice to support engagement.
- 🌏 EALD students: Use visual aids, sentence starters, and vocabulary cards; pre-teach key terms wherever possible.
- 🛠 ICP Level students (Year 3): Scaffolded worksheets that simplify explanations of each operation with visuals and fewer steps.
- 🏁 High Achievers (B–A range): Challenge task integrating all 4 operations into open-ended real-world problems (e.g. plan a shopping trip under budget).
⏰ Lesson Timeline (60 Minutes)
| Time | Activity |
|---|
| 0–10 mins | Warm-up Game: Operation Relay |
| 10–20 mins | Explicit Teaching: Operation Meanings & Models |
| 20–35 mins | Hands-On Rotation Activities |
| 35–50 mins | Worksheet: ‘Operation Detective’ Differentiated Task |
| 50–60 mins | Reflection Circle + Gratitude & Kindness Exit Slip |
🔄 Lesson Sequence
1. 🔥 Warm-Up Game – Operation Relay (10 mins)
Overview: Set the tone for fun and teamwork with this movement-based review game. Students in teams run to collect operation symbols and match them to problems.
Setup:
- Four teams of ~6–7 students.
- At one end of the room, have symbols ∑ ➖ × ÷ printed and laminated.
- On the whiteboard: a range of number sentences without symbols (e.g., 6 __ 2 = 4).
Instructions:
- One runner per team collects 1 symbol card.
- The team discusses which number sentence it belongs to.
- Responses are placed with the problem.
- Teams rotate runners until all matches are made.
- Debrief responses as a class.
Support/Challenge:
- Students needing support can be symbol sorters instead of runners.
- Higher-achieving students can justify symbol placement using maths vocabulary.
2. 📚 Explicit Teaching – What Are Number Operations? (10 mins)
Use the whiteboard and visual representations to define and model:
- Addition with base-ten blocks.
- Subtraction as "take away" and "difference".
- Multiplication as "groups of".
- Division as "sharing" and inverse of multiplication.
Use real-life scenarios:
- Shopping totals (addition).
- Giving away pencils (subtraction).
- Party packs (multiplication).
- Sharing lollies evenly (division).
Anchor Chart (Learning Wall) built during this time using colour-coded visuals and post-it examples.
3. 🧩 Hands-On Rotation Stations (15 mins)
Break the class into 5 groups of approx. 5–6 students. Each table has a different hands-on learning station (rotate or assign for time efficiency).
| Station | Focus | Description |
|---|
| 🎲 Game Zone | Multiplication | Dice roll to form number sentences and model with blocks. |
| 🃏 Card Sort | Matching Ops | Match word problems to their correct operation + symbol. |
| 🟠 Play Dough Maths | Subtraction | Use playdough to model "take away" using scenarios. |
| 🧮 Beads & Bowls | Division | Divide beads into equal sets—write matching number sentence. |
| 🧠 Challenge Table | All Ops | Open-ended question with multiple solutions ("You have $100, plan a pizza party for 4 people") |
Differentiation:
- ICP students at Subtraction and Beads stations with simplified tasks.
- High achievers are encouraged to record working using correct terminology.
- EALD & dyslexic students get a picture card / sentence starter pack.
4. 📝 Worksheet: “Operation Detective” (15 mins)
Custom-tailored worksheet with tiered sections:
| Version | For Whom | Content |
|---|
| Red Level | ICP Students | Match operation symbols to simple word problems, draw or colour matching number sentences. |
| Yellow Level | C-range & EALD | Mixed-operation short problems. Fill in blanks using correct operation. Sentence scaffolds provided. |
| Green Level | B–A Level Students | Solve multi-step word problems where students must decide which operation(s) to use. Explain their reasoning. |
Use red-yellow-green dots for self-selection / teacher-assigned levels.
5. 🗣 Reflection Circle + Kindness Integration (10 mins)
Sharing Circle (2 mins personal think time + 8 mins class chat):
- Prompt: "Which operation do you find easiest or trickiest? Why do you think that is?"
- Emphasise respect and active listening.
- Ask 2–3 students to share ways their partner helped during lessons today = link to kindness and gratitude focus.
Extension:
- Exit Slip (self-assessment tick box + short reflection):
“One thing I learnt today...” / “One way I showed kindness was...”
🔎 Assessment for Learning
- Observation during activities and discussions
- Operation Detective worksheet responses
- Exit slip reflection for student voice and emotional regulation insight
📌 Teacher Reflection Notes
To be filled in after the lesson:
- Which stations were most/least engaging?
- Was the vocabulary retained during the final discussion?
- Did the students self-select Bump It Up Zones accurately?
- Were differentiation needs met (particularly II, ICP, EALD, dyslexia)?
