Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 minutes – Welcome and visual hook

Open with the fraction mystery hook. Show a picture of one whole chocolate bar divided into equal pieces, with some pieces shaded, and ask: “How could we describe this fairly?” Invite students to notice the equal parts without introducing the formal terms immediately.

Share the WALT and success criteria in student-friendly language. Explain that the class will learn two important fraction words and use them to read fraction symbols.

  1. 5–13 minutes – Explicit teaching

Use the numerator and denominator teaching slides to model a fraction such as 3/4 alongside a rectangle divided into four equal parts, with three shaded. Write and say: “The denominator is the bottom number. It tells us how many equal parts make the whole. The numerator is the top number. It tells us how many parts we are counting or showing.”
