📝 Learning Intentions
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- Navigate a movement-based obstacle course using throwing, catching, balancing, and dodging skills.
- Show improved hand-eye coordination through various tasks.
- Display cooperation and safe behaviours within a shared physical space.
- Identify the importance of trying new ways of moving during challenges.
✅ Success Criteria
Students:
- Complete the obstacle course showing control and coordination.
- Participate cooperatively with classmates.
- Attempt all components of the course with a positive attitude.
- Listen to instructions and follow safety rules.
🧠 Prior Knowledge
This lesson builds on:
- Basic underarm throwing and ball catching techniques (from previous lessons).
- Experience with moving through simple pathways and personal space games.
🛠️ Equipment Required
- 4 mini cones (for dodging path)
- 6 bean bags
- 6 soft foam balls
- 3 low balance beams (or chalk-marked floor lines if inside)
- 3 small hoops
- 6 hoops (to jump between)
- 2 low tunnels or arches (can also use tables draped with sheets)
- 1 coloured mat (start/finish)
- Speaker and child-friendly music playlist (optional)
Note: Equipment should be safely placed and spaced to ensure ample room for movement and visibility. A space such as a gymnasium, covered outdoor area or soft grassed area works well.
⏰ Lesson Structure (45 minutes)
⌛ Warm-Up (10 minutes) — “Move like an Animal!”
Instruction:
Students copy the teacher in moving like different animals across the activity space.
- Jump like a frog
- Crawl like a bear
- Tiptoe like a cat
- Waddle like a duck
- Gallop like a horse
Focus: Loosening muscles, elevating heart rate, activating imagination.
Extension: Ask students to create their own animal movement.
🧗 Main Activity (30 minutes) — “Obstacle Course Challenge”
The obstacle course is divided into 6 stations. Students will work in small groups of 2 at each station, rotating every 5 minutes. Clear and enthusiastic instructions should be given before the activity begins.
Station 1: Throw & Catch
- Students throw soft balls into a hoop from a marked point.
- Partner gently throws a beanbag for them to catch.
- Focus: Throwing accuracy, catching with two hands.
Station 2: Balance Beam Walk
- Walk heel-to-toe across a beam (or tape line), trying not to step off.
- Challenge: Can they balance an object (e.g. beanbag) on their head or hands?
Station 3: Hula-Hoop Jumps
- Lay 6 hoops in a zig-zag pattern. Students jump from hoop to hoop using both feet.
- Extension: Try hopping on one foot through half the hoops.
Station 4: Tunnel Dash
- Students crawl through a tunnel to the other side. Could also be under tables with sheets.
- Encourage creative crawling (e.g., forwards, backwards like a crab).
Station 5: Dodge Cone Alley
- Students jog through cones while avoiding gentle "tag" balls rolled across the space.
- Focus: Spatial awareness and dodging motion.
Station 6: Partner Pass & High-Five
- Partners roll or gently pass a ball to each other and finish with a high-five.
- Focus on teamwork and soft hand control.
Rotation Tip: Teacher whistles or claps every 5 minutes for rotation. Use a timer for consistency.
🎉 Cool Down (5 minutes) — “Statues & Stretching”
- Students move freely until music stops — freeze like a statue!
- Repeat 3-4 times for engagement.
- End with group stretching:
- Reach to the sky
- Touch toes
- Arm circles
- Shake off energy
Encourage deep breathing to settle down.
📚 Differentiation Strategies
Support:
- Use larger or softer balls for students who need easier handling.
- Allow walking instead of jumping for hoops and dodging activities.
Extend:
- Encourage students to try balancing backwards.
- Set time goals for completing the full challenge.
🤝 Classroom Management & Safety
- Reinforce group behaviour expectations before beginning the course.
- Designate clear STAY zones outside activity area for resting students.
- Use non-slip mats and soft surfaces wherever possible.
- Ensure all students have worn appropriate footwear and hats if outdoors (SunSmart).
🗣️ Reflection & Review (Optional Exit Activity)
Talking Circle:
Gather the group and invite each student to share:
- "What was your favourite obstacle today?”
- "What helped you not give up when something was hard?"
This builds oral language and reinforces emotional resilience.
👩🏫 Teacher Reflection (Post-Lesson Notes)
- Were students engaged throughout each station?
- Did all students participate at their own ability levels?
- Were any stations too easy or difficult?
- How was the timing and flow of group transitions?
Record adjustments for future lessons in the unit.
🌟 Extension Ideas
- Family Connection: Send home a mini “create your own obstacle course” activity for students to try with family.
- Visual Schedule: Introduce a visual station card sequence next time to increase independence.
🧡Final Thought
This Obstacle Course Challenge transforms fundamental movement into a magical journey. It encourages students to connect mind and body through imaginative, cooperative play — laying the groundwork for a lifelong love of movement and physical confidence.
