Padlet Beginnings

Overview

Today students are introduced to Padlet as a digital tool for creating and sharing ideas. They will learn how to contribute safely and legibly, then create a short “learning wall” entry for a new informative topic using sentence-level accuracy.

Learning intentions

• Students will use digital technologies to create a Padlet post with clear, readable text.
• Students will follow teacher instructions to log in (or access a Padlet link) and post an idea.
• Students will plan, create, and revise a short informative sentence for a target audience (their classmates).
• Students will reflect on how their post helps others understand.

Success criteria

• I can find the Padlet wall, open a new post, and submit my idea.
• I can write a short informative sentence with a clear starting capital letter and ending punctuation.
• I can read my post and fix mistakes before posting.
• I can comment respectfully to help a peer’s understanding.

Lesson structure (60 minutes)

1. 0–5 min · Hook (think). Teacher displays the introduction slides and asks: “What makes a good digital post so others can understand quickly?” Students do a quick think, then share one idea with a partner.

2. 5–12 min · Model (see it). Teacher uses the introduction slides to model opening Padlet (teacher prepared access), showing where to type, where to click “post”, and what a finished post looks like. Students watch, then answer: “What did you notice about the text—length, punctuation, and clarity?”

3. 12–22 min · Guided practice (try with support). Teacher returns to the introduction slides and guides students through a class practice Padlet wall: students work in pairs to compose one informative sentence about a familiar process (e.g., “Plants help people by…”, “Rain forms when…”, or “Volcanoes can…”). Teacher prompts sentence structure: capital letter, clear topic, full stop. Students draft in pencil on the digital practice worksheet, then teacher checks two or three pairs.

4. 22–35 min · Independent practice (create on Padlet). Teacher directs students to the digital practice worksheet final box: students copy their revised sentence into Padlet and submit it. Teacher circulates, checking:

• they are posting in the correct Padlet wall
• spelling and punctuation are readable
• they do a quick read-through before submitting Students submit one Padlet post and remain seated for the “respectful viewing” stage.

5. 35–47 min · Share and comment (audience purpose). Teacher uses the introduction slides to explain and model two comment types: “I learned…” and “Can you add…?”. Students read at least two classmates’ posts and add one short supportive comment (or a helpful suggestion) if class rules allow commenting; otherwise students record a comment idea on the digital practice worksheet.

6. 47–55 min · Reflection (metacognition). Teacher brings the class back to the introduction slides and prompts reflection questions:

• “What made your post easy to understand?”
• “What did you revise, and why?” Students write a brief reflection on the digital practice worksheet in 2–3 sentences.

7. 55–60 min · Plenary (quick exit check). Teacher asks students to hold up their worksheet and uses a 1-minute “gallery walk without moving”: students point (quietly) to one part of their post they are proud of (punctuation, clear beginning, or revision). Teacher confirms key success criteria.

Assessment

• Formative observation during guided practice: can students locate the post box and type a complete sentence with correct punctuation.
• Quick check of submitted posts (legibility, sentence clarity, target-audience purpose).
• Reflection on the digital practice worksheet shows what students revised and why.

Differentiation

• Support: provide a sentence starter bank on the digital practice worksheet (e.g., “Plants help by…”, “Rain forms when…”), plus a checklist for capitals and full stops before posting.
• EAL: allow students to draft using highlighted word banks; accept shorter sentences as long as meaning is clear and punctuation is present.
• SEN: offer a copy-paste template sentence on the worksheet; reduce typing load by requiring only one sentence and one comment.
• Extension: invite students to add one extra informative detail (e.g., “because…”), or include a second sentence using “For example,” if time allows.
