Create lesson on Participating Safely
Learning Intention:
Do it now activity: Every sport and physical activity carries some level of risk, but risk does not always mean danger. When you know what to look for and have the skills to manage it, you can participate with confidence rather than fear. For each of the following scenarios, identify two risks and two safety strategies.
Swimming at the beach — no flags, big waves Basketball — wet court, no warm-up Running — worn out shoes, headphones in traffic
During the lesson:
Static stretching is holding a position for a short time and is usually performed during a cool-down. Examples include holding a quadricep stretch.
Dynamic stretches are stretches performed while moving to help warm up muscles by increasing blood flow. These stretches are normally done during a warm-up. Examples include leg swings, walking lunges and high knees.
Warm-ups are important because they:
prepare your muscles by increasing blood flow so they’re ready to move increase your heart rate and blood flow so your body gets more oxygen increase joint mobility so you can move more easily prevent injuries such as pulled muscles or sprains shift your focus so you can concentrate on the activity.
Cool-downs are important because they:
slow your heart rate back to resting relax your muscles and help them feel less stiff reduce muscle soreness help to calm your mind.
Skipping warm-ups and cool-downs is one of the most common causes of sports injuries. These routines are your first line of defence for staying safe during physical activity.

Health and Physical Education (PDHPE)
50 minutes
30 students
Focus Area:
Personal, Social and Community Health – Movement and Physical Activity
Content Descriptions:
Achievement Standard:
By the end of Year 8, students plan and apply strategies for health, safety and participation in physical activities, including warm-ups and cool-downs, describing how these strategies help prevent injury and improve performance .
Activity: Risk Identification and Safety Strategy Brainstorm
Present these three scenarios (can be projected or on a worksheet):
Task:
For each scenario, students identify:
Purpose:
This activity activates prior knowledge of participation safety and sets a context of risk management for physical activities.
Explain why warm-ups are essential:
Explain dynamic stretching (stretches done while moving). Examples include leg swings, walking lunges, high knees.
Show the General and Sport-Specific Warm-Ups from the reference image:
Explain importance of cool-downs:
Explain static stretching (holding a stretch). Examples: quadriceps stretch held for 20-30 seconds.
Show General and Sport-Specific Cool-Downs:
Teaching Tip:
Use simple demonstrations or short videos to show dynamic vs static stretches.
Use these guided questions:
Encourage students to think about motivation, time pressures, or understanding of risks and benefits.
Group Task:
Ask students to write down a quick exit ticket answering:
Collect these to check individual understanding quickly.
This lesson plan is grounded in the NSW PDHPE curriculum with a focus on practical application, safe participation, and student engagement through discussion and active learning. It utilises the uploaded warm-up and cool-down guidance images to enhance clarity and supports students' development of safe, effective exercise habits that align with curriculum standards 【Screenshot 2026-04-20 at 2.40.30 PM.png】【Screenshot 2026-04-20 at 2.40.45 PM.png】.
