Pilates session Annotated Lesson Plan
Please use the 2027 syllabus Throughout the unit the focus on inclusive physical education will be a clear theme of lectures and practical sessions. The limitations of traditional approaches to teaching physical education will be explored with the aim to encourage students to reflect deeply on how such practices can marginalise some students and privilege others. This task encourages students to plan for more inclusive approaches to physical education.
Students are required to plan and prepare a 60-minute lesson plan on an activity of their choice (cannot be a games and sport based lesson). The lesson plan should be annotated with modifications/adaptations/approaches that have been specifically planned for to ensure that the lesson is inclusive of a diverse group of students.
The lesson plan and annotations should reflect the various principles and practices of inclusive physical education and should be evidence based ie. supported with literature.
Essential to this task are the evidence-based annotations. These MUST be evidenced based (relevant literature cited) and MUST explain how the lesson has been planned to be inclusive of students who are often marginalised in Physical Education. Exemplary syllabus application - activities clearly and explicitly reflect the content statements and the included skills. All syllabus information in page one of the lesson plan is correct and as required. The lesson could be delivered by a third person using the submitted LP and resources. There is clear evidence of what will be taught/learn across the activities. Exemplary activities - activities are engaging, progressive and varied and would promote multidimensional learning for diverse students. Exemplary evidence-based annotations that consistently and explicitly explain how lesson modifications, pedagogy, management strategies etc have been purposefully planned to engage diverse students in learning in a physical education lesson.

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
| Time (mins) | Activity Description | Annotation on Inclusivity and Evidence-Based Practice |
|---|---|---|
| 0–5 | Welcome & Introduction | Provide a calm, supportive start; outline learning goals and inclusivity focus. Establish classroom norms for respect and safety to ensure all students feel valued (Shields & Synnot, 2016). |
| 5–15 | Warm-up (Gentle Mobility & Breathing) | Use low-impact, adaptable movements accessible to all students including those with mobility limitations (Rimmer & Rowland, 2008). Emphasise diaphragmatic breathing to support body awareness and regulation. |
| 15–30 | Pilates Fundamentals Instruction | Teach core Pilates principles: alignment, breathing, control. Use visual, verbal and tactile cues catering to diverse learning styles (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2021). Provide seated or floor-based options to ensure accessibility for students with physical disabilities (Goodwin et al., 2021). |
| 30–50 | Guided Pilates Flow & Practice | Lead a progressive sequence of Pilates exercises. Offer varying degrees of difficulty within each exercise (differentiation). Encourage peer support and self-pacing to foster inclusion and autonomy (Sherrill, 1998). Use equipment like mats and resistance bands for modifications. |
| 50–60 | Cool Down & Reflection Discussion | Incorporate gentle stretching. Invite student reflections on their experience focusing on inclusivity aspects – how modifications helped participation and wellbeing. Facilitate sharing strategies to support diverse peers (Booth et al., 2022). |
| 60–63 | Summary & Exit | Recap key learning points. Emphasise respect and understanding of diversity in physical activity. Encourage ongoing participation in mindful movement activities. |
This Pilates lesson plan has been carefully designed to align with the NSW 2027 HPE curriculum for Stage 5 by integrating movement skill development, social skills, and health and wellbeing. It strongly embeds inclusive practice through differentiated activities tailored to accommodate physical, sensory, social, and learning diversities. This approach counters traditional PE marginalisation by fostering a supportive, accessible, and reflective learning environment where all students can flourish. The annotations provide a transparent rationale based on relevant Australian and international research, enabling confident implementation by teachers unfamiliar with Pilates or inclusive pedagogy.
