This is lesson 2 of 4 in Exploring Youth Justice Issues. Students build on prior learning about youth justice by analysing how infographics and graphs represent Indigenous young people and justice-related issues. Lesson structure (40 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Hook and respectful framing. Students silently note one observation and share it with a partner.

  2. 5–11 min · Direct teaching: reading visual data. Teacher models the “TAP–V–I” process using the data-reading model slides: identify the Title and purpose, inspect the Audience and source, then consider Presentation; describe the Visible pattern; and explain an Implication. Teacher explicitly demonstrates checking the legend, units, dates, labels, scale and whether a graph shows number, percentage or rate. Students annotate the model and ask clarifying questions.

  3. 11–25 min · Paired infographic investigation. Teacher forms pairs and distributes the infographic analysis worksheet with a clear, high-contrast infographic or graph using teacher-selected Closing the Gap data about Indigenous youth justice. Students complete the prompts: What is represented? Who produced it and for whom? What patterns or comparisons are visible? Which words, images, colours or graph choices guide attention? What is missing or difficult to tell? What might this data imply, and what can it not prove? Teacher conferences with pairs and checks that students distinguish observation from inference.

  4. 25–32 min · Compare and challenge interpretations. Teacher displays the comparison and discussion slides and asks pairs to compare their infographic with a second visual representation of a related issue. Students use the sentence frame, “Both texts represent…, but they differ in… because…”, then identify one design or language choice that affects the audience. Selected pairs share responses; the class tests claims by returning to evidence, source, timeframe and definitions.

  5. 32–37 min · Individual analytical response. Teacher models a concise evidence-based paragraph on the paragraph scaffold slide. Students independently write 4–5 sentences explaining one implication of the visual data, including a specific feature or pattern, its possible effect on the audience, and a cautious statement about context or limitations. Students may use the worksheet prompts and sentence starters.

  6. 37–40 min · Exit check and preview. Teacher revisits the WALT on the plenary slide and asks students to complete the worksheet exit prompt: “One visual choice that shaped my interpretation was…; one implication of the data is…; one question I still have is…”. Teacher collects responses to plan the next lesson on evaluating evidence and perspectives.
