Lesson structure (90 minutes)

  1. 0–8 min · Hook and prior knowledge. Open with the visual scale hook and learning intentions showing a large community park beside a small site plan. Ask, “How can a plan fit a real space onto one sheet without losing accuracy?” Students estimate what a scale such as 1 cm represents and share examples of maps, models or recipes that use scale or ratios.

  2. 8–20 min · Explicit teaching. Use the worked scale examples to model the relationship between a real measurement and a drawing measurement. Demonstrate that a scale of 1 cm: 2 m means every 2 metres in the space is represented by 1 centimetre on the plan. Model converting 8 m to 4 cm, recording units at every step, and checking by multiplying back. Students complete two guided examples on mini-whiteboards and explain the conversion in words.

  3. 20–32 min · Practical measurement. Explain the task using the measurement instructions and safety reminder. In three pairs, students measure a defined community space outdoors or in the room, such as a courtyard, reading area or garden zone. They record length, width, fixed features, entrances and obstacles on the measurement section of the sustainable community scale-plan worksheet. Rotate roles so each student measures, records and checks at least once.

  4. 32–45 min · Choose and test a scale. Give each pair a copy of the ratio table and double number line mat. Students test two possible scales, complete equivalent measurements, and decide which scale will fit the available planning grid while remaining detailed enough to show features. Confer with each pair: “What is the largest real dimension?” “How much space will it occupy on paper?” “Will your labels still be readable?” Students record and justify their selected scale on the worksheet.

  5. 45–70 min · Create the scaled site plan. Revisit the site-plan checklist and model. Students use rulers and grid paper to draw the boundary, convert and plot measured dimensions, and add at least three appropriate community features, such as paths, seating, shade, garden beds, water collection or waste stations. They label every feature, include a title, scale statement, legend and units. The teacher checks one conversion from each pair before students continue and prompts them to verify dimensions by measuring their drawing.

  6. 70–82 min · Peer review and improve. Display the review questions in the peer-feedback prompts. Pairs exchange plans with another pair and check scale consistency, calculations, labels, units, neatness and practical fit. Each reviewer gives one specific commendation and one improvement suggestion. Students make corrections and annotate one change they made after feedback.

  7. 82–90 min · Plenary and exit check. Use the reflection and exit questions. Students individually answer on the final section of the worksheet: “A path is 14 m long. At a scale of 1 cm: 2 m, how long is it on the plan?” and “Why might a different scale be more practical?” Invite two students to explain their reasoning, then preview that the next lesson will use plans to investigate area and perimeter.
