Teaching Instructions

I want to plan on writing sentences and short paragraphs using descriptive language. My students work better if there are visual ques or images to use in their writing

Overview

Today students plan and write descriptive sentences and a short paragraph for an imaginative topic, using visual cues to choose precise vocabulary and link ideas with correct tense and simple punctuation. The lesson includes modelling, guided practice, editing, and a short share so students can publish a polished set of writing.

Learning intentions

  • Students will create descriptive sentences using visual cues to choose strong adjectives and verbs.
  • Students will combine sentences into a short paragraph with a clear beginning, middle and end.
  • Students will use correct spelling of common multi-syllable words and use simple punctuation (capital letters and full stops).
  • Students will revise their writing to improve word choice and make ideas link smoothly.

Success criteria

  • I can write 4–6 descriptive sentences that include specific details (who/what, where, how).
  • I can group my ideas into a short paragraph with a clear beginning, middle and end.
  • I can use relevant linking words to connect my ideas (for example: and, but, because, then).
  • I can reread and edit for full stops, capital letters and spelling of high-frequency words.

Curriculum links

  • English Literacy: plan, create, edit and publish written and multimodal imaginative texts using visual features, relevant linked ideas, complex sentences, appropriate tense, synonyms and antonyms, correct spelling of multisyllabic words and simple punctuation.
  • Select and group ideas into simple paragraphs to sequence content (AC9E4LY06_E2).
  • Use topic-specific, precise and varied vocabulary (AC9E4LY06_E3).
  • Use grammatical features and edit to improve word choice and cohesion (AC9E4LY06_E4, AC9E4LY06_E5).

Lesson structure (20 minutes total)

  1. 0–3 min · Hook (visual cue). Teacher shows the introduction slides (first image slide only) of a “mysterious creature/object in a landscape” and asks, “What do you notice first, and what makes it interesting?” Students do a quick think-write of 3 observations (naming words + describing words) in the margins.

  2. 3–8 min · Model (sentence building). Teacher moves through the introduction slides to demonstrate a “word bank to sentence” process using the visual:

  • Model a few descriptive sentences with underline highlights for adjective/verb choices and one example of a linked idea using a connective.
  • Emphasise simple punctuation (capital letter + full stop) and appropriate tense (usually present tense for imaginative writing). Students repeat the structure orally with the teacher: “I can see… / It looks… / The… is… / Then…”
  1. 8–13 min · Guided writing (first draft). Teacher distributes the descriptive sentences and paragraph worksheet and points to the picture cues.
  • Students choose 4 image details and write 4 descriptive sentences using sentence starters on the worksheet.
  • Teacher circulates, conferring with a prompt: “Can you make one word more precise?” and “Where could you add a connective to link your ideas?”
  1. 13–17 min · Paragraph assembly + editing check. Teacher returns to the introduction slides where the paragraph structure is shown: Beginning (introduce), Middle (more details), End (final feeling/action). Students:
  • Select 2–3 best sentences and arrange them into one short paragraph on the worksheet.
  • Do a quick self-edit using a checklist at the top: capital letters/full stops, spelling of key words (refer to a provided word bank), and at least one connective.
  1. 17–20 min · Share + feedback. Teacher uses the introduction slides for a “Glow and Grow” sentence to guide sharing. In pairs (or small groups of 3), students read their paragraph and receive one compliment and one suggestion, choosing from: “Add one more precise adjective” or “Try a connective like because/then.”

Resources

  • the introduction slides
  • the descriptive sentences and paragraph worksheet
  • Student writing books or lined paper (if needed for extra space)
  • Visual sentence starters (on the slide deck and also on the worksheet)
  • Word bank card (adjectives, verbs, linking words; included on worksheet)
  • Timer for 3–5 minute writing blocks
  • Coloured pens/pencils for underlining descriptive words during editing

Assessment

  • Teacher uses a quick checklist during conferring: descriptive word choice, punctuation, and at least one connective.
  • Collect the descriptive sentences and paragraph worksheet at the end of the lesson to check paragraph structure and editing.
  • Use a final micro-question during share: “Which word did you improve and why?”

Differentiation

  • Support: Provide sentence starters and a small word bank on the descriptive sentences and paragraph worksheet; allow students to circle adjectives/verbs first before writing. Offer a scaffolded “connective sentence” starter: “Then… / Because…”.
  • Support for students needing structure: Provide a “choose 2–3 sentences” guide with numbered boxes (1=beginning, 2=middle, 3=end).
  • Extension: Challenge students to include one complex sentence (e.g., “Although it was small, it looked dangerous.”) and include a synonym replacement during editing (swap a common adjective for a more precise one).
  • EAL/learning needs: Encourage oral rehearsal before writing; accept translation notes in the margin; provide visuals to reduce language load.
  • Dyslexia-friendly practices: Keep lines uncluttered, use clear headings/checklists, and allow chunked writing (write one sentence at a time).
