WALT (We Are Learning To)

  • WALT present our media artworks confidently to an audience.
  • WALT reflect on our creative choices, including media languages, technologies and meanings.
  • WALT appreciate and respectfully critique the work of our peers.

Success Criteria

  • I can clearly explain the choices I made while creating my artwork.
  • I can identify media languages and technologies used in my work and others'.
  • I can listen respectfully to others and offer constructive feedback.
  • I can suggest ways I might improve my work next time.

Resources

  • Student media artworks (pre-prepared during the unit)
  • Device (laptop/tablet) if digital works are involved
  • Display screen/projector/speakers (as needed)
  • Printed Dyslexia-Friendly Prompt Sheets (OpenDyslexic font, larger text, plain background)
  • Peer Feedback Stars and Wishes Template (simple printed handouts)
  • Timer or Clock

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction (5 minutes)

  • Welcome the students warmly to the final session of Media Arts Exploration!
  • Outline today's session simply:
    • Present your artwork.
    • Describe your creative choices.
    • Reflect on what worked well and what you’d change.
  • Emphasise respect during presentations—clapping and giving kind, helpful feedback.
  • Dyslexia-Friendly Option: Read instructions aloud and display short, bullet-pointed steps on the board in OpenDyslexic font.

2. Student Presentations (25 minutes)

  • Split class into two groups:
➔ Group 1 presents while Group 2 is the audience, then swap midway (after about 12 presentations).

  • Each student presentation (about 1 minute each):

    1. Briefly show their work (e.g., short video, digital image, poster).
    2. Answer these guiding prompts (verbal or readable on the board):
      • What was your main message?
      • Which media languages and technologies did you use?
      • What did you enjoy most?
  • Audience Task:

    • After each presentation, students complete a quick Stars and Wishes activity:
      • 🌟 One thing the presenter did really well (star)
      • 💭 One idea for future improvement (wish)
    • Use simple two-word responses or a sentence on the handout.
  • Teacher role during presentations:

    • Keep time flexible but moving.
    • Prompt students gently if they hesitate.
    • Build a cheerful, supportive vibe.

3. Whole-Class Reflection (8 minutes)

  • Gather everyone together in a circle on the floor or seated comfortably.

  • Lead a reflective conversation using open questions:

    • What media languages did you notice across different works?
    • How did different technologies impact the finished artworks?
    • Was it harder or easier to communicate your idea with technology?
  • Dyslexia-Friendly Variation:
    Provide sentence starters like:

    • "One thing I learned today is..."
    • "One idea I had today is..."
    • "I would like to try..."
  • Quickly record some key words volunteered by students onto a visible sheet or digital board.

4. Celebration and Conclusion (2 minutes)

  • Applaud the hard work and creativity shown by everyone!
  • Hand out “Media Arts Explorer” certificates or stickers if desired.
  • Remind students that reflecting is part of every real artist’s or filmmaker’s process—they are real creators now!

Differentiation

Extension Activities for Advanced Learners:

  • Students can present an additional 'Director's Commentary'—explaining why they made two specific technical choices.
  • Students could suggest innovative ways to improve projects if re-creating them for another audience (e.g., younger children, school fair).

Support for Students with Dyslexia or Additional Needs:

  • Offer printed speaking prompts using dyslexia-friendly fonts.
  • Allow flexibility: students can choose to read prepared notes instead of speaking off-the-cuff.
  • Allow peer buddy support: students can present with a partner if needed.

Teacher's Note

  • Create a warm, open environment: normalise being a bit nervous!
  • Celebrate effort as much as presentation outcomes.
  • Take a few candid photos (if permitted) to commemorate the event.

Assessment Opportunities

  • Listen for the use of media arts terminology during presentations.
  • Check peer feedback sheets for understanding of media techniques.
  • Look for meaningful comments during whole-class reflection.
