Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Hook and respectful framing. Teacher opens with the opening comparison: “If two headlines use the same numbers, can they create different impressions?” and reminds students to discuss systems, evidence and media choices rather than making assumptions about individuals or communities. Students silently record their first response and identify one word that might influence a reader.

  2. 5–12 min · Mini-lesson: reading numbers critically. Teacher uses the statistics toolkit to model four questions: What is the numerator? What is the denominator? What is the time, place and source? What has been left out? Briefly teach the difference between a number, a percentage and a rate, and explain that a percentage without its denominator or comparison group can mislead.   6. 40–45 min · Exit reflection. Teacher returns to the opening question through the plenary and exit prompt. Students submit a response to: “One way statistics shape perception is… One question a responsible reader should ask is…”. Invite two or three students to share, without requiring personal disclosure.
