Lesson Breakdown (40 Minutes)
⏱️ 0–5 Minutes: Welcome and Engagement
- Acknowledge Country: “We pay our respects to the traditional custodians of this land...”
- Brief discussion: “What makes the Australian bush special? What can we hear, see, and feel?”
- Teacher shows a short 1-minute animated clip of a bush scene to spark inspiration.
Engagement strategy: Use familiar bush stories like Possum Magic or Wombat Stew to connect narrative themes.
⏱️ 5–10 Minutes: Brainstorming and Planning
Differentiation tip: Provide students with template story starters or a “Bush Story Wheel” for idea generation.
⏱️ 10–20 Minutes: Drawing and Content Creation
- Students draw at least one scene from their story using digital drawing tools or paper (to photograph/upload).
- Teacher roves the room supporting with technical questions and story development.
- Optional: Students record sound effects or narration of their story using the iPad microphone.
Creative suggestion: Encourage students to use household items to re-create bush sounds (leaves rustling, branches snapping).
⏱️ 20–35 Minutes: Digital Story Construction
- Using Book Creator, Keynote, or Scratch Jr, students begin building their 3–5 slide story:
- Upload drawing or drag and draw directly in the app.
- Add sound clips or recorded narration.
- Insert basic animations (e.g., a bird flying across the page).
Tech support cues:
- Use layering tools in Keynote for simple animations.
- In Book Creator: drag drawings, press the 'record' button for narration, add emojis or shapes.
⏱️ 35–40 Minutes: Share and Reflect
- 2 or 3 students can share one page of their digital book with the class.
- Whole class reflection:
- “What challenges did you face using these new tools?”
- “What did your bush story say about Australia?”
Exit ticket: Students draw a quick emoji on a sticky note to show how they felt about combining art and technology.
Extension Opportunities
- Develop the full story for publishing online or class library.
- Introduce students to layered soundscapes using a mixing app like GarageBand.
- Create animated covers using Canva for Education.
