Teaching Instructions

This is lesson 10 of 10 in the unit "Dribble, Protect, Score!". Lesson Title: Showcase and Reflect Lesson Description: Students demonstrate their dribbling skills in a fun showcase, followed by reflections on strategies learned throughout the unit.

Showcase and Reflect

We Are Learning To demonstrate effective dribbling skills and reflect on strategies we have learned during our unit.

Success Criteria - I Can

  • I can confidently dribble a ball using the skills learnt.
  • I can protect the ball from an opponent.
  • I can participate fairly and show good sportsmanship.
  • I can reflect on what helped me improve my dribbling.

Equipment

  • Size 3 or 4 balls suitable for young children (one per student)
  • Cones to mark boundaries and stations
  • Bibs to differentiate teams if needed
  • Whistle
  • Markers for reflection seating area

Lesson Structure (50 minutes total)

1. Retrieval Warm-up (7 minutes)

Activity: Dribble Tag

  • All students have a ball to dribble inside a marked area.
  • One or two students are “taggers” (wear bibs).
  • Taggers try to gently tag others on foot while players protect their ball by dribbling carefully.
  • Students must move safely, keeping control and shielding the ball (proteger la pelota).

Link to previous lesson: Reinforces dribbling control, spatial awareness, and protecting the ball.

2. Goals and Success Criteria (4 minutes)

  • Clearly explain the WALT and “I Can” statements.
  • Link explicitly to Victorian Curriculum: Movement and Physical Activity – Practise fundamental movement skills to move the body and objects confidently (VC: HPE-2) Personal, Social and Community Health – Demonstrate fair play and cooperation (VC: HPE-2)

Speak slowly and clearly to support bilingual students. Include simple Spanish key words: driblar (dribble), proteger (protect), juego justo (fair play).

3. Learning (I Do – We Do – You Do) (14 minutes)

I Do (4 minutes)

  • Teacher models a simple dribbling routine showing:
  • Soft touches with the inside of the foot.
  • Head up to see space.
  • Use body to shield the ball.
  • Give simple cues: “Toque suave” (soft touch), “Mira adelante” (look ahead), “Uso mi cuerpo” (use my body).
  • Model behaviour expectations for safe, fair play.

We Do (5 minutes)

  • Students practise dribbling slowly alongside partner.
  • Teacher guides by giving feedback, asking:
  • “¿Dónde está tu cabeza?” (Where is your head?)
  • “¿Puedes proteger el balón?” (Can you protect the ball?)
  • Scaffold by demonstrating again or helping physically if needed.

You Do (5 minutes)

  • Students try to dribble away from a partner who gently tries to "steal" the ball.
  • Encourage safe body positioning to protect the ball.
  • For advanced learners: use only left or right foot.

4. Consolidation: Showcase Game (18 minutes)

Activity: Dribble, Protect, Score Showcase

  • Split class into small teams (4-5 students per team).
  • Small-sided games played inside marked fields.
  • Objective: Dribble, protect the ball, and score by dribbling into a marked goal zone.
  • Rotate teams for multiple brief games.
  • Teacher circulates giving feedback, re-teaching quick tips to students struggling (e.g., softer touches, use body).
  • Differentiation:
  • Support: Larger balls, smaller playing area.
  • Extension: One-touch dribbling goals or use only non-dominant foot.

5. Show Me What You Know: Reflection and Peer Sharing (6 minutes)

  • Students sit in small groups reflecting on their learning.
  • Questions for discussion:
  • What helped you dribble better?
  • How did you protect the ball from your opponents?
  • What will you remember next time you play?
  • Pair-share reflections using simple sentence starters: “I can dribble…” / “I protect my ball by…”
  • Teacher listens and provides positive reinforcement.
  • Link back to “I Can” criteria for self-assessment.

Behaviour and Safety Expectations

  • Always keep control of the ball to avoid collisions.
  • Respect personal space and others’ attempts to play fairly.
  • Listen carefully to instructions and encouraging words.
  • Use equipment safely and share with classmates.
  • Encourage teammates with positive language in English or Spanish, e.g., “¡Buen trabajo!” (Good job!), “Fair play!”

Notes for Teacher

  • Use visual cues and simple bilingual language to enhance comprehension.
  • Maintain high active time to keep students engaged.
  • Encourage peer support and teamwork, fostering inclusion for all ability levels.
  • Keep lesson lively and fun, celebrating progress and cooperation.

This lesson perfectly wraps up the unit by allowing students not only to show their developed dribbling skills but also to think critically about their learning journey, while supporting the Victorian Curriculum outcomes with a practical, inclusive, and engaging approach.
