Australia's Amazing Habitats Explored

What is a Habitat?
A habitat is a natural home for animals and plants. It provides everything living things need to survive. Food, water, shelter, and space to live. Different animals need different types of habitats.

Let's Think Together!
Can you name some Australian animals? Where do you think they live? What do they need in their habitat to survive?

1. Arid (Dry) Outback Habitat
This is a huge, very dry part of Australia that gets very little rain. It has red sand dunes, rocks, and tough, spiky grass called spinifex. The weather: Extremely hot during the day and can get freezing cold at night. Who lives here: Red kangaroos, thorny devil lizards, emus, and dingoes. These animals are experts at saving water and staying cool.

Bearded Dragon
Change the colour of their skin when scared or to regulate their temperature. They can run fast and even climb trees! They feed on fruit, leaves, insects and small reptiles.

Bilby
Small marsupial with long ears and pointed snout. Lives in burrows underground in the outback Nocturnal - active at night to stay cool Eats insects, seeds, and small plants Endangered - only found in remote areas

2. Forest and Woodland Habitat
These are areas filled with trees. In forests, tall eucalyptus or rainforest trees grow close together to block out the sun. In woodlands, the trees are smaller and spaced further apart with plenty of grass in between. The weather: These areas get regular rain, making them green and bushy. Who lives here: Koalas, kookaburras, possums, and tree-frogs.

Sugar Glider
Small marsupial with furry membrane for gliding. Lives in eucalyptus forests and woodlands Nocturnal - active at night Eats nectar, sap, insects and small animals Can glide up to 50 metres between trees
Lyrebird
Amazing mimic bird that copies other sounds. Lives in forests and woodlands of Australia Males have spectacular tail feathers Can copy chainsaws, car alarms, and other birds

3. Coastal and Marine Habitat
What it is: This is where the sandy beaches and rocky cliffs meet the giant saltwater ocean. It includes shallow rock pools, underwater kelp forests, and colourful coral reefs like the Great Barrier Reef. The weather: Windy, salty, and wet! Who lives here: Green sea turtles, dolphins, clownfish, humpback whales, and crabs.
Penguin
Lives on rocky coasts and islands around Australia Smallest penguin species in the world Also called fairy penguins or blue penguins Hunts for fish and small sea creatures Makes burrows in sand dunes and rocks

Shark
Are large aquatic animals that eat other fish to survive. They have an endless supply of teeth and have no bones in their body!
