What is Australian Federation?
Federation happened on 1 January 1901 Six separate colonies joined together to form Australia They needed to choose leaders for the new nation This created our system of government and voting
Federation Leaders We've Studied
Henry Parkes - 'Father of Federation' Alfred Deakin - First Attorney-General Edmund Barton - First Prime Minister These leaders helped create our voting system
Think About It
How do you think the Federation leaders decided who would be in charge? What would happen if people couldn't vote for their leaders?
What is Voting?
Voting is how we choose our leaders Every adult Australian citizen can vote It's a way to have your say in democracy Voting is both a right and a responsibility
How Preferential Voting Works
Voting Activity: Choose Our Class Leader
We have 4 candidates for Class Captain You will number them 1, 2, 3, 4 in order of preference 1 = your first choice, 2 = your second choice, etc. We'll count the votes using preferential voting!
Why Voting Matters in Australia
{"left":"Gives everyone an equal say\nHelps choose the best leaders\nProtects our rights and freedoms","right":"Makes sure government represents the people\nPrevents unfair treatment\nAllows peaceful change of government"}
Democracy in Action
"The vote is the most powerful instrument ever devised for breaking down injustice." - This is why the Federation leaders created our voting system
