States the main idea of the paragraph Usually comes at the beginning Tells the reader what to expect Should be clear and specific
Spot the Topic Sentence
Read the paragraph about dolphins Identify which sentence tells us the main idea Discuss why it's effective Share your answer with the class

E - Explain
Provides more detail about the topic sentence Answers questions like 'how?' and 'why?' Develops the main idea further Uses clear, specific language
