Creating 3D Island Art Models
Year 6 Visual Arts 60-minute lesson Exploring form, texture, and spatial design

What Makes an Island Special?
Islands are surrounded by water They have unique landforms - beaches, cliffs, mountains Different vegetation zones from coast to interior Artists use shape, texture, and color to show these features

Planning Your Island Adventure
Sketch your island design in your workbook Include at least 3 different features (beach, forest, mountain) Think about colors and textures you'll use Consider what materials will work best for each part

Building Your Island Base
Start with cardboard foundation Use paper mache or air-dry clay for landforms Build up mountains and hills gradually Create different levels and depths

Adding Texture and Detail
{"left":"Press leaves into clay for forest textures\nSprinkle sand on wet paint for beaches\nUse sponges to dab paint for rocky surfaces","right":"Twist pipe cleaners into tree shapes\nLayer different shades of blue for water depth\nAdd small twigs for fallen logs or driftwood"}

Color and Painting Techniques
Mix earth tones for land areas Layer blues and greens for water Use dry brushing for rocky textures Blend colors while wet for smooth transitions

Reflection Time
What features make your island unique? Which materials worked best for creating textures? How did you use color to show different areas? What would you do differently next time?

Artist's Inspiration
"Every island tells a story through its shapes, colors, and textures. As artists, we use our materials to bring these stories to life in three dimensions."
