Earth's Resources: Renewable vs Non-Renewable
Year 7 Science Understanding Our Planet's Precious Resources
Learning Intention:
W are learning to: Understand the concept of Earth's resources Distinguish between renewable and non-renewable resources Provide examples of each type of resource Consider the importance of sustainable use
Success Criteria
Understand the concept of Earth's resources Distinguish between renewable and non-renewable resources Provide examples of each type of resource Consider the importance of sustainable use
Resource Detective Challenge
Look around the classroom for 5 minutes Find 3 items made from Earth's resources Write down what resource each item comes from Discuss your findings with a partner Be ready to share one surprising discovery!
What Are Earth's Resources?
Think about everything you use in a typical day... Where do these things come from? What materials from Earth do we depend on?
Earth's Resources Defined
Earth's resources are natural materials and energy sources that we use to meet our needs They include everything from the air we breathe to the minerals in our phones Resources can be living (like trees) or non-living (like rocks) We depend on these resources for survival and modern life
Video: Understanding Earth's Resources
Watch carefully and take notes on key differences Focus on examples of renewable vs non-renewable resources Note how each type affects our environment Think about which resources you use daily. https://youtu.be/PLBK1ux5b7U
Renewable vs Non-Renewable Resources
{"left":"Read 6.1.1 Jac Plus and Complete Table 6.1: Identify if each resource is renewable or non-renewable\nGive reasons for your decisions using scientific knowledge","right":"Non-Renewable Resources\nExist in limited amounts\nCannot be replaced in human timeframes\nExamples: coal, oil, natural gas, minerals"}
Resource Detective Activity
Work in pairs to sort resource cards Create a T-chart: Renewable vs Non-Renewable Categories to sort: solar energy, wind, timber, coal, natural gas, water, oil, animals, minerals Present one example from each category to the class
Australian Resources Examples
Why Does Sustainable Use Matter?
Non-renewable resources will eventually run out Overusing renewable resources can damage ecosystems Future generations need resources too Sustainable use means taking only what can be replaced We can choose renewable alternatives when possible
Science Inquiry: Classify Resources Activity
{"left":"Read 6.1.1 Jac Plus and Complete Table 6.1: Identify if each resource is renewable or non-renewable\nGive reasons for your decisions using scientific knowledge","right":"Complete Table6.2 : Research materials made from natural resources\nIdentify gaps in knowledge and research missing information"}
