HLTAID011 Provide First Aid Year 12 Health & Physical Education Essential Skills for Emergency Response
Why Learn First Aid?
Medical emergencies can happen anywhere, anytime Quick response can prevent death or permanent disability Legal and moral obligation to help when qualified Builds confidence in emergency situations Required for many careers and volunteer roles
Chain of Survival
DRSABCD Action Plan
D - Danger: Check for hazards R - Response: Is the person conscious? S - Send for help: Call 000 A - Airway: Clear and open B - Breathing: Check for normal breathing C - CPR: Start chest compressions if needed D - Defibrillation: Use AED if available
Recognising Cardiac Arrest
Person is unresponsive to voice and touch No normal breathing or gasping/agonal breathing No pulse (check for 10 seconds maximum) Skin may appear blue or grey Time is critical - brain damage begins within 4-6 minutes
CPR Technique Practice
Position: Center of chest, between nipples Hand placement: Heel of hand, fingers interlocked Compression depth: 5-6 cm for adults Rate: 100-120 compressions per minute Ratio: 30 compressions to 2 rescue breaths Minimize interruptions Continue until help arrives or person responds
Adult vs Child vs Infant CPR
{"left":"Adults: 2 hands, 5-6cm depth, 30:2 ratio\nChildren (1-8 years): 1-2 hands, 1/3 chest depth, 30:2 ratio\nInfants (under 1 year): 2 fingers, 1/3 chest depth, 30:2 ratio","right":"All ages: 100-120 compressions per minute\nAdjust hand position for smaller bodies\nSame DRSABCD principles apply"}
Using an AED (Automated External Defibrillator)
Turn on AED and follow voice prompts Remove clothing from chest, ensure dry Place pads as shown in diagrams Ensure no one is touching the person Press shock button when advised Continue CPR immediately after shock AED will reanalyze every 2 minutes
Emergency Scenarios
Scenario 1: You find someone collapsed in a shopping center Scenario 2: A classmate chokes on food at lunch Scenario 3: Someone falls and hits their head, bleeding heavily What would you do in each situation? Work through the DRSABCD process for each
Key Takeaways
Every second counts in an emergency Follow DRSABCD systematically Call 000 early and often CPR and AED use can double survival chances Regular training maintains skills Good Samaritan laws protect those who help You now have the knowledge to save a life
