Fractions: Halves, Quarters and Eighths
Year 1 Mathematics Learning about equal parts

WALT (We Are Learning To)
Recognise halves, quarters and eighths Model and label equal parts Divide things equally Name fractions correctly

What is a Fraction?
A fraction is part of a whole The whole can be divided into equal parts Each part must be the same size We use fractions to share things fairly

Success Criteria 1: Recognising Equal Parts
Are the parts equal? Count the parts Name the fraction

Halves - Dividing into 2 Equal Parts
One whole becomes 2 equal parts Each part is called 'one half' Both parts must be the same size We write it as 1/2

Quarters - Dividing into 4 Equal Parts
One whole becomes 4 equal parts Each part is called 'one quarter' All four parts must be the same size We write it as 1/4

Success Criteria 2: Folding Practice
Hold the whole Fold to make 2 halves Fold again to make 4 quarters Check for gaps or overlaps Label each part

Eighths - Dividing into 8 Equal Parts
One whole becomes 8 equal parts Each part is called 'one eighth' All eight parts must be the same size We write it as 1/8

Let's Practice Together!
Look at this shape Are the parts equal? How many parts can you count? What fraction is this?

Key Learning Summary
Fractions are parts of a whole Halves = 2 equal parts (1/2) Quarters = 4 equal parts (1/4) Eighths = 8 equal parts (1/8) All parts must be equal in size
