Fractions & Percentages: Year 7 Mastery
Australian Curriculum ACARA Building Mathematical Understanding Year 7 Mathematics
Learning Intentions & Success Criteria
Understand what fractions represent as parts of a whole Convert between fractions, decimals and percentages Perform operations with fractions confidently Apply fraction and percentage knowledge to real-world problems Success: Can explain fraction concepts, calculate accurately, and solve practical problems
Fraction Exploration Activity
Work in pairs to create fraction models Use paper plates, colored paper, or digital tools Create at least 5 different fractions Show equivalent fractions using different models Present one example to the class
Equivalent Fractions & Mixed Numbers
{"left":"Equivalent fractions represent the same value: 1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8\nFind equivalents by multiplying or dividing numerator and denominator by the same number\nSimplify fractions by finding the greatest common factor","right":"Mixed numbers combine whole numbers and fractions: 2 3/4\nConvert improper fractions to mixed numbers\nConvert mixed numbers to improper fractions"}
Adding & Subtracting Fractions
Like denominators: Add/subtract numerators, keep denominator Unlike denominators: Find common denominator first Use least common multiple for efficiency Example: 1/4 + 1/6 = 3/12 + 2/12 = 5/12 Always simplify your final answer
Check-In Question
A recipe calls for 2/3 cup of flour and 1/4 cup of sugar. How much more flour than sugar is needed? Show your working and explain your reasoning. Discuss with a partner before sharing with the class.
Multiplying & Dividing Fractions
Multiplying: Multiply numerators together, multiply denominators together Example: 2/3 × 1/4 = 2/12 = 1/6 Dividing: Multiply by the reciprocal (flip the second fraction) Example: 2/3 ÷ 1/4 = 2/3 × 4/1 = 8/3 Remember to simplify your answers
Real-World Applications
Calculate discounts during shopping sales Determine sports statistics and win percentages Analyze survey results and data Work through practical percentage problems Create your own real-world problem for a classmate
