WALT: We Are Learning To

Multiply fractions using visual models Apply the multiplication algorithm for fractions Simplify fraction products to lowest terms Solve real-world problems involving fraction multiplication

Success Criteria
Slide 3

Success Criteria

I can draw visual models to show fraction multiplication I can multiply numerators together and denominators together I can simplify my answers to lowest terms I can explain my thinking using mathematical language

What Does Multiplication Mean?
Slide 4

What Does Multiplication Mean?

Multiplication means 'groups of' or 'parts of' 3 × 4 means '3 groups of 4' = 12 1/2 × 1/3 means '1/2 of 1/3' We're finding a fraction OF another fraction

Visual Model Activity: 1/2 × 1/3
Slide 5

Visual Model Activity: 1/2 × 1/3

Draw a rectangle and divide it into 3 equal parts Shade 1/3 of the rectangle Now divide the rectangle into 2 equal rows How much is shaded in both directions?

The Multiplication Algorithm
Slide 6

The Multiplication Algorithm

Step 1: Multiply the numerators together Step 2: Multiply the denominators together Step 3: Simplify if possible Example: 1/2 × 1/3 = (1×1)/(2×3) = 1/6

Differentiation Strategies
Slide 7

Differentiation Strategies

{"left":"Visual learners: Use fraction circles, rectangles, and area models\nStruggling learners: Start with unit fractions (1/2, 1/3, 1/4)","right":"Advanced learners: Try mixed numbers and improper fractions\nKinesthetic learners: Use physical fraction manipulatives and hands-on activities"}

Practice Together: 2/3 × 3/4
Slide 8

Practice Together: 2/3 × 3/4

Draw your visual model first Apply the multiplication algorithm Check: Do both methods give the same answer? Simplify your final answer

Extension Challenge
Slide 9

Extension Challenge

A recipe calls for 3/4 cup of flour You want to make 2/3 of the recipe How much flour do you need? Can you solve this using both visual models AND the algorithm?

Key Learning Summary
Slide 10

Key Learning Summary

Fraction multiplication means finding 'part of a part' Visual models help us understand what's happening Algorithm: multiply numerators, multiply denominators Always check if your answer can be simplified Both methods should give the same result
