Shapes: Features, Combinations, and Transformations
Year 2 Mathematics Exploring 2D shapes and their properties

What Are 2D Shapes?
2D shapes are flat They have length and width We can draw them on paper They are all around us!

Shape Hunt Activity
Look around the classroom Find 5 different 2D shapes Draw or point to what you find Share with a partner

Circle Features
Perfectly round No corners or edges One curved line all around Like a wheel or ball (from above)

Triangle Features
Has 3 straight sides Has 3 corners (vertices) Can be different sizes Like a slice of pizza or roof
Square Features
Has 4 equal sides Has 4 corners All corners are the same Like a window or tile

Rectangle Features
Has 4 sides Opposite sides are equal Has 4 corners Like a door or book

Shape Detective Question
I have 3 sides and 3 corners. What shape am I? Raise your hand when you know!

Combining Shapes
Two shapes can make a new shape We can put shapes together Like building with blocks Let's try some examples!

Triangle Combination Challenge
Take 2 triangles Put them together What new shapes can you make? Try different ways!

Separating Shapes
{"left":"A big shape can be split\nInto smaller shapes","right":"Like cutting a sandwich\nEach piece is still a shape"}

Shape Transformations
Shapes can slide (move) Shapes can flip (reflect) The shape stays the same Only its position changes
