Telling Time on Analogue Clocks
Year 3 Mathematics Learning to read time using hour and minute hands
WALT - We Are Learning To
Read time on an analogue clock using the hour and minute hands Point to and name the hour hand and the minute hand Count around the clock in groups of 5 minutes Show simple times on our clocks and write them digitally
Time Words Connection
Think: What activities take seconds? Minutes? Hours? Examples: Brushing teeth, School day, TV advertisement Write the best unit: a) brushing teeth b) school day c) TV ad
Parts of an Analogue Clock
Short hand = Hour hand (tells us which hour) Long hand = Minute hand (tells us minutes past the hour) Numbers 1-12 around the outside Each number represents 5 minutes when counting minutes
Counting Minutes in Groups of 5
Digital Clocks and Time Conversion
WALT: Read time on digital clocks and convert analogue to digital Success Criteria: I can read hours and minutes on digital displays Digital clocks show time with numbers and colons (:) Example: Analogue 3:15 becomes digital 3:15 Practice: Look at both clock types together
Reading Different Times
{"left":"3:00 - Hour hand on 3, minute hand on 12\n7:30 - Hour hand between 7 and 8, minute hand on 6","right":"2:15 - Hour hand between 2 and 3, minute hand on 3\n9:45 - Hour hand between 9 and 10, minute hand on 9"}
Practice Time!
Set your paper plate clock to show: 4:00 Draw the time on your whiteboard Write the digital time Check with your partner
Today We Learned
We can read the hour and minute hands on analogue clocks We can count minutes in groups of 5 around the clock We can write analogue time as digital time This helps us measure how long events take!
