Unlocking the Elements of Storytelling
Year 8 English Exploring Personal Narratives Lesson 2 of 16
WALT (We Are Learning To)
Identify and explain the essential elements of storytelling: setting, character, and plot Analyse narratives to recognise these elements and understand their role in a story Use graphic organisers to map story elements visually Begin creating storyboards that demonstrate these elements
Success Criteria
✓ Clearly explain the roles of setting, character, and plot in a story ✓ Identify these elements in a given personal narrative ✓ Use a graphic organiser to represent these elements visually ✓ Begin creating a storyboard outline using these elements
Every Story Has Three Essential Elements
Setting: Where and when the story takes place Character: The people or beings in the story Plot: The sequence of events including problem and resolution
Setting: The Foundation of Your Story
{"left":"Time: When does your story happen? Past, present, future? Specific year or season?\nPlace: Where does your story unfold? Real location or imaginary world?","right":"Atmosphere: What mood does the setting create? Scary, peaceful, exciting?\nWhy it matters: Setting influences character behavior and plot possibilities"}
Character Analysis Activity
Read the provided personal narrative Use your graphic organiser to identify: • Main characters and their traits • How characters drive the story forward • Character relationships and conflicts Share your findings with a partner
Plot: The Journey of Your Story
Beginning: Introduces characters and setting, establishes the normal world Middle: Presents the main conflict or problem that characters must face End: Shows how the conflict is resolved and what characters learn Plot drives the story forward and keeps readers engaged
Extension: Create Your Storyboard
Using your graphic organiser as a guide: Sketch 6-8 key scenes from a fictional personal narrative Show clear setting details in your drawings Include main characters and their emotions Demonstrate beginning, middle, and end plot structure Advanced learners: Add dialogue and detailed descriptions
