MAIN Causes of WWI
M - Militarism: Countries building large armies and competing in arms races A - Alliances: Countries promised to protect one another, causing conflict to spread I - Imperialism: Competition over colonies and global power N - Nationalism: Extreme pride and loyalty to one's country creating tensions

Sarajevo, 28 June 1914 Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary assassinated by Gavrilo Princip Austria-Hungary blamed Serbia and declared war Alliance system caused the conflict to spread across Europe One assassination became a world war due to existing tensions
Gallipoli and the Dardanelles Campaign
Strategic Goal: Control the Dardanelles waterway to reach Russia Open supply route to Russian allies Defeat the Ottoman Empire and knock them out of the war Campaign became extremely difficult due to: • Steep terrain and strong Ottoman defences • Trench warfare conditions • Extreme heat, disease, and limited supplies
Why Australians Enlisted in WWI
Loyalty to Britain: Australia was part of the British Empire Adventure and travel: Young men wanted to see the world Social pressure: Expected to serve their country Employment and pay: Steady income during economic uncertainty Propaganda: Government campaigns encouraged enlistment Mateship: Friends enlisted together
Conscription Referendums in Australia
Conscription = Compulsory military service By 1916, volunteer numbers were declining Prime Minister Billy Hughes proposed conscription Two referendums held: 1916 and 1917 Both referendums: Australians voted NO Issues: Religious objections, Irish-Australians opposed British war, fear of industrial disruption
