Overview
This 40-minute lesson is designed for transition year students to develop their understanding and use of Aimsir Chaite (the past tense) in Gaeilge. The lesson aligns with the Junior Cycle Framework (2022) for Irish within the Curriculum Framework for Ireland, focusing on Communication, Language and Literacy development, and intercultural competence. It includes interactive, student-centred activities supported by formative assessment to ensure competency and confidence in the past tense.

- Audio recordings of native speakers using past tense verbs in context (prepared beforehand)
- Mini whiteboards and markers for student response
- Timer or stopwatch
Lesson Structure
1. Introduction / Recap (5 minutes)
- Start with a brief interactive quiz on the board: Give mixed verb forms and ask students to identify if they are present or past tense. Use mini whiteboards for individual responses to check prior knowledge.
- Recap Aimsir Chaite formation rules for regular verbs (for -AR, -IR, -AIL verbs). Highlight the use of “d’” and the exceptions with irregular verbs.
Curriculum Alignment: Supports oral language development (JCPA Strand 1), encourages engagement with language patterns.
2. Focused Grammar Practice (10 minutes)
- Present a whiteboard chart of common irregular verbs (bí, téigh, déan, feic) conjugated in Aimsir Chaite.
- Students work in pairs to complete a cloze exercise: fill in missing verb forms in a short paragraph reflecting a typical past event.
- Highlight the position of negative particles (Níor, Nior) and question forms (Ar, An).
Competency: Literacy, Knowledge and understanding of grammar structures (JCPA Strand 3, 5).
3. Listening and Speaking Activity (10 minutes)
- Play a short audio clip featuring a native speaker describing their weekend activities using Aimsir Chaite.
- Task students to jot down verbs they recognize and the context in which they are used.
- Follow up with a paired speaking task: Students interview each other about last weekend using question forms taught.
Aim: Develop listening comprehension and spontaneous oral use of Aimsir Chaite (JCPA Strand 2).
4. Creative Writing Task (10 minutes)
- Students write a brief diary entry (5-6 sentences) about what they did over the last weekend using a mix of regular and irregular verbs in Aimsir Chaite.
- Provide sentence starters and a list of verbs to support less confident students.
- Teacher circulates, providing formative feedback and correcting where necessary.
Standard: Encourages written communication skills and correct grammar usage (JCPA Writing Strand).
5. Review and Assessment (5 minutes)
- Conduct a quick round of ‘Spot the Mistake’ on sample sentences written on the board with past tense errors. Students correct errors in pairs.
- Wrap up with an oral round where each student says one sentence in Aimsir Chaite about what they learned or did prior.
Assessment: Formative assessment through observation, oral and written checks aligned with Curriculum expectations of integration of grammar and communication skills.
Differentiation
- Stronger students: Challenge to include less common irregular verbs or complex sentence structures (e.g., subordinate clauses) in writing.
- Supportive scaffolding: Use of verb charts, sentence starters, and peer collaboration.
Reflection / Extension
To extend learning beyond the classroom, students could record a short video diary in Irish narrating a past event using Aimsir Chaite to prepare for peer-review next lesson. This digital element supports the curriculum priority on using digital tools to communicate and reflect.
This lesson plan offers a dynamic, multi-modal approach to mastering Aimsir Chaite that integrates listening, speaking, reading, and writing. It is fully compliant with IE Curriculum and engages students deeply with authentic language use.
