Grade Level: 3rd Class
Subject: Art
Duration: 50 minutes
Number of Students: 26

Curriculum Framework

This lesson plan aligns with the Irish Primary School Curriculum for Visual Arts. It encourages creativity, expression, and engagement with themes related to animals while incorporating hands-on activities.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students will:

  1. Create a 3D model of an animal using recycled materials.
  2. Discuss and reflect on their chosen animal’s habitat and characteristics.
  3. Work collaboratively in pairs to enhance teamwork skills.

Materials Needed

  • Recycled materials (cardboard, plastic bottles, paper, etc.)
  • Glue and tape
  • Scissors
  • Paint and paintbrushes
  • Markers and coloured pencils
  • Animal reference images (books or printouts)
  • Table covers for easy cleanup
  • An example 3D animal model made by the teacher

Lesson Outline

Introduction (10 minutes)

  1. Circle Time Discussion (5 minutes)

    • Gather students in a circle.
    • Briefly discuss animals and their habitats. Ask guiding questions like:
      • “What are some animals you know?”
      • “Where do they live?”
    • Introduce the day's activity: creating a 3D model of an animal.
  2. Show Example Model (5 minutes)

    • Present the example 3D animal model created by the teacher.
    • Explain the materials used and how they can also use similar resources to create their own artworks.

Activity (30 minutes)

  1. Pair Students (2 minutes)

    • Organise students into pairs to promote collaboration.
  2. Brainstorming (8 minutes)

    • In pairs, students will discuss:
      • Which animal they want to create and why.
      • The habitat of the chosen animal and what materials may represent it best.
  3. Creating the Model (20 minutes)

    • Distribute materials to each pair and allow them to start building their 3D animal models.
    • Encourage creativity—students can use any of the materials in unique ways.
    • Walk around to assist and provide guidance.

Conclusion (10 minutes)

  1. Gallery Walk (5 minutes)

    • Once models are completed, have students display their works on desks.
    • Conduct a gallery walk, giving students time to admire each other’s creations.
  2. Reflection (5 minutes)

    • Gather students back in a circle. Each pair shares:
      • The animal they created
      • One interesting fact about it
      • The materials used in their model
    • Celebrate their work and creativity.

Assessment and Evaluation

  • Observation: Monitor student engagement during creation and collaboration.
  • Reflection Sharing: Assess understanding and articulation of animal facts and habitats.
  • Peer Feedback: Encourage pairs to compliment each other’s models to build confidence.

Differential Learning

  • For students who may need extra support:

    • Provide templates of animals they can trace.
    • Have more defined roles in pairs (one can focus on construction while the other on decoration).
  • For advanced learners:

    • Challenge them to incorporate more intricate details or to explain additional facts about their animal’s habitat.

Clean-Up

  • Allocate the last 5 minutes for students to clean up their workspace.
  • Ensure all materials are sorted and put away properly.

Key Competencies

  • Creativity and Imagination: Foster artistic expression.
  • Collaboration: Enhance social skills through teamwork.
  • Environmental Awareness: Use of recycled materials promotes sustainability.

This lesson plan provides a rich, hands-on experience for third-class students while reinforcing key art skills and promoting an appreciation for the animal kingdom.
